Babel (2006)

De film van Alejandro González Iñarritu heeft noodlot, miscommunicatie en culturele verschillen als voornaamste thema's en bestaat uit verschillende episodes (waartussen een noodlottige verbintenis blijkt te bestaan) die op diverse lokaties op de aardbol plaatsvinden. Niet gek dus dat er heel diverse muziek uit meerdere werelddelen te vinden is op de twee volle CD's beslaande soundtrack. En ondanks de zware thema's is sommige van die muziek (zoals bijv. Mexicaanse Mariachi-muziek en opzwepende discofunk van Earth, Wind & Fire) heel vrolijk. Dit alles wordt verbonden door de score van Gustavo Santaolalla, die vnl. bestaat uit virtuoos akoestisch gitaarspel. En dan zijn er de stukken van Ryuichi Sakamoto, zoals de bijna tien minuten lange onheilspellend-minimalistische klanksculptuur "Only Love Can Conquer Hate" dat in de film bijzonder effectief als score dient bij de meest beklemmende passage in de film.
