These original monophonic recordings were made on Oct 7th and 8th 1952. They were the last recordings she made. John Culshaw tells how during the recording she had news from the hospital and she looked "radiant", saying, "they say I'm all right, luv". He says, "A few minutes later she sang, 'He was despised' with a beauty and simplicity that I cannot think has been, or will be, surpassed." Later there were so many enquiries as to whether stereo recordings had been made that in 1962 the LPO and Adrian Boult re-recorded the accompaniment in stereo which was superimposed on the original mono, synchronising the performance with the original recording. What a joy this is: her swan song; her last live performance was only a few weeks later before she died of cancer at only 41. The thrilling and poignant quality of her voice shines through. I particularly love the "O thou that tellest" which is so joyful and the tender "Father of Heaven". (Gebruikersrecensie Amazon.com)
