The Romantic piano concerto - 11 Scharwenka, Von Sauer (1995)

CD uit 1995 met twee plaatpremières: Het Vierde pianoconcert van de Oost-Pruisische componist Franz Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) en de Hamburgse componist-pianist Emil von Sauer (1862-1942). De link tussen de twee is, dat Von Sauer Scharwenka's concerten veel gespeeld heeft en zelfs de première van diens eerste concert verzorgde. Zijn eigen Eerste pianoconcert bracht hij ook zelf in première. Hier wordt het uitstekend gespeeld door Stephen Hough. "Confronted with the unfailing quality and originality of the material unearthed by Hyperion so far in this series, one can only point an accusing finger at the lazy conservatism of promoters who are unwilling or incapable of resurrecting these pieces in the concert hall. The two concertos given new life on this CD are grandly conceived and tuneful in the best Romantic tradition. If they are occasionally formulaic, does that really matter?"
