Op dit inmiddels alweer achtste solo album van de ex-frontman van de Britse band Dire Straits werkt hij samen met een band bestaande onder andere uit Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle/flute), Glenn Worf (bass) en Ian Thomas (drums). Gast muzikanten op Tracker zijn onder andere Ruth Moody (bekend van The Wailin Jennys) opvocalen, Nigel Hitchcock (saxophone) en Phil Cunningham (accordeon). Over het album zegt Mark Knopfler zelf: The album title Tracker arrived out of me trying to find my way over the decades. Out of me tracking time - looking at people, places and things from my past, and out of the process of tracking as in recording tracks in the studio."
