"Verve keeps serving up new installments of the extensive Charlie Haden tribute at the 1989 Montreal Festival, each featuring a different lineup of guests. With longtime Haden cohort Paul Motian manning the drums, pianist Geri Allen's work is always technically adroit, often adventurous, prodding and challenging the massive-toned Haden into producing some of his most out-there work of recent years. Indeed, near the top of the set, she turns very feisty in "Fiasco," prompting a long avant-garde passage from Haden.
