Silver In Seattle : Live At The Penthouse (2025)

"In 1965, bop pioneering pianist Horace Silver was at the top of his game. By the time of this gig at Seattle’s Penthouse, he had just released a pair of classic albums and was riding on the hit song “Song For My Father” which featured Silver’s piano intro which would eventually net him a ton of money from being copied by Steely Dan on “Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number”. The band here featured Woody Shaw/tp, Joe Henderson/ts, Teddy Smith/b and Roger Humphries/dr, and everyone is in an inspired mood. The team is galloping like stallions on the double timed “The Kicker” with Shaw spitting out notes like an AK47. Henderson is rich and bluesy on “Sayonara Blues”, Humphreys rumbles to Silver’s calypso on “Cape Verdean Blues” and the horns are burning in unison as they almost spontaneously combust on “No Smokin’”. Silver’s masterpiece “Song For My Father” is delicious. And it’s amazing how well this has aged, in fact sounding even better when compared to the surfeit of talented imitators of today."
