The complete piano trios (2026)

"A friend of Beethoven from their time in the Bonn Court Orchestra, Prague-born Antoine Reicha (1770-1836) is more famous for his theoretical writings and his influence on later generations (his impressive roster of pupils included Liszt, Berlioz and Franck) than his prolific musical output. Wind players enjoy the quintets he composed for the members of the Paris Opéra-Comique orchestra. Few, though, will know the six piano trios published as Grands Trios Concertants in Paris in 1824. Some of Reicha’s early works had given him a reputation for eccentricity. You’d hardly guess it from these trios. While Mozart, Haydn and early Beethoven are the obvious stylistic models, Reicha shares little of their developmental drive and inspired unpredictability. Amiability is the default mode in music that is always elegantly crafted (Reicha, like Beethoven, treats the piano trio as a true democracy), yet rarely seeks to go beyond brilliance and charm.(...)"
