The Anthology Of Unamerican Folk Music Vol. 1 (2026)

"Harry Smith's landmark "The Anthology Of American Folk Music" (1952) went on to have an outsized impact on the folk revival of the early '60s, influencing subsequent generations. Beyond Smith's well-documented hoard of rural American music was a bounty of international recordings collected over decades of globetrotting. Anderson's surprising response was to create her own anthology, not of American music but from territories that have been in conflict with the U.S. Using her own birth year of 1970 as a parameter, "The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music" adapts tunes from the various conflict zones of her lifetime: Southeast Asia, the former U.S.S.R., the Middle East. Since the guitar is her primary tool, Anderson did her best to transcribe songs originally played on decidedly un-American instruments like the danbura, duduk, and rubab. It's a fascinating exercise that feels necessarily foreign (to Western ears) but somehow still bears her distinctive musical stamp." (Allmusic; 4,5 uit 5 sterren)
