"On 2023’s covers set "Versions", Catherine Anne Davies honoured formative influences. For her return, she revisits the personal turf of 2021’s "The Art Of Losing", using familial voices – daughter, grandmother – as cues for a bold, impassioned and literate art-rock song cycle about time, change and generations. Dreamy overture "Du Temps Perdu" leads to songs that swagger ("Throw Over Your Man"), bite ("I Had A Baby Not A Lobotomy") and swoon ("Damsels"), with Davies mixing simpatico collaborators (Gwenno, James Dean Bradfield, Eaves Wilder) and Pete Townshend’s vintage synths to full-bodied effect. Alongside Karen Carpenter-ish pleas ("All I Really Want Is Peace") and bruised reveries ("Stop The World"), themes of righteous rage and resilience emerge. While "What You Did" wrestles with pain, the proggy "Hand To The Tide" finds Davies’ voice soaring majestically: a singular artist giving her ambitions free, fervent rein."
