Synonym (2026)

"One of Meshell’s superpowers is the ability to hop in and hop on anything and make something that sounds different and yet her own. That’s fed and contributed to her extensive 30-plus-year career. So "Synonym", which places the acclaimed polymath, singer-bassist-producer, recontextualizing a Hitsville-curated set of quintessential tracks as duets with a murderer’s row of special guests, is a dream-boogie treasure that fits our star bassist with a serious project that feels fun. For example, the Cynthia Erivo reworking of the Aretha Franklin/George Michael duet “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” switches from its big-’80s anthemness of a previous era into this tender, vulnerable, and strident attitude. “Don’t Stop The Music” with Nick Hakim and Robert Glasper is working some interstellar deconstructed funk with jazzy notes adorning the portal entrance. "Synonym" reminds me of those epic records, for one main reason: you have to be a master musician to massage egos, rework charts, and still personally shine. I hope this becomes a new thing that happens with irregular regularity." (Treble)
