Een portret van John Lennon eind zestiger jaren toen the Beatles uit elkaar begonnen te vallen. De eens zo eenvoudige jongens uit Liverpool waren uitgegroeid tot wereldsterren. John Lennon werd verafgood maar zat vol met frustraties over zijn jeugd en raakte op drift. De dood van vaderfiguur Brian Epstein, de scheiding van zijn eerste vrouw Cynthia en de fascinerende liefdesrelatie met Yoko Ono en zijn drugsgebruik eisten hun tol. Deze film bestrijkt vooral deze periode als Lennon begint met zijn solocarrière. Sam Wollaston (The Guardian 24 juni 2010) vindt dat Eccleston eigenlijk te oud (46) is voor zijn rol maar: 'It's still a brilliant performance, in a brilliant film, because what Eccleston does get spot-on is the spirit of Lennon, with all his complications, contradictions and demons. (...) The music is not bad either of course. The soundtrack to the latter part of the film comes from the first solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.'
