Between 1685 and 1750, trumpets transcended their role as heralds and bringers of announcements and were accorded a place of esteem as soloists with the baroque string band. Baroque composers wrote for trumpets when they needed music that was bright, jubilant or stentorian. Practitioners of the instrument developed phenomenal techniques as the sought to maximize the number of playable notes produced from a piece of brass tubing with a mouthpiece at one end and a bell at the other with no way of manipulating pitches beyond micro-fine adjustments of their embouchures. This recording is a compendium of baroque music for multiple trumpets, representative of various styles and trends of composition. Included are both concertos with orchestra and works in which the trumpets function as their own ensemble with nothing more than timpani (and in one instance a small organ) to leaven the mix. "( ) Throughout these works, he, Leppard, and the English Chamber Orchestra are consistently clean and precise. They also are careful not to add overly affected expression to the music, although these are not period instruments nor are they using period performance practice, as Marsalis points out in the accompanying notes. Marsalis has a beautiful, smooth tone that is clear, but not sharply brilliant, so it blends wonderfully with the strings. The Hummel is especially attractive, where Marsalis plays as if he were singing an aria in the Andante, and the Rondo at times takes on the humor of a Gilbert and Sullivan patter song. ( ) The sound quality is excellent, becoming brighter as it moves into the bonus tracks. Op 25 februari 2012 overleed Maurice André. Naast de bekende trompetconcerten nam hij ook veel bewerkingen op van voor andere instrumenten geschreven muziek, zoals in dit geval bewerkingen voor de combinatie trompet en orgel. Deze dubbel-CD uit 1996 bevat eerder los van elkaar op LP uitgebrachte opnamen uit 1977 en 1981. "Music from the string, woodwind, brass, orchestral, choral, or goodness knows what repertory, transcribed (well) for Maurice André, the most fluent of trumpet soloists, in duet with organ, perhaps the only accompanying instrument which can take on such a soloist on equal terms.
