"This overstuffed box not only includes White's 3 initial albums for Monument, but adds dozens of extra songs and outtakes, most of which have never been heard before, and includes a fourth disc of previously unreleased live and studio tracks. Even though the singer/songwriter/guitarist was signed to Monument in 1966 (both sides of his debut single are included), his first album was not recorded until 1969. By that time White had pretty much nailed his trademark swamp sound. The musky yet melodic songs and evocative lyrics married to White's baritone voice reveled in his scrappy Louisiana roots. His finest work effortlessly combined blues, country and folk. While others had worked similar territory, in particular Bobbie Gentry (her "Ode to Billy Joe" was a major inspiration), he infused a rock and R&B sensibility that drove the music with gritty authenticity and his "whomper stomper" wah-wah pedal. In 1987 sloot singer/songwriter John Hiatt een ellendige periode af door met z'n laatste centen z'n favoriete bevriende studiomuzikanten te boeken. In korte tijd werd een intens doorleefde plaat opgenomen die niets minder dan Hiatts meesterwerk bleek te zijn: "Bring The Family". Vijf jaar later kwam dit kwartet opnieuw bijeen om als Little Village een album en tournee te maken. We hebben het hier over Hiatt, Nick Lowe (basgitaar), Ry Cooder (gitaren) en Jim Keltner (drums). Die Little Village-plaat ontbeerde de intensiteit van "Bring The Family" en ook tijdens de tournee klonken de heren alsof ze inmiddels te blij waren. Dat blijkt ook uit dit voor de Amerikaanse radio opgenomen concert. Begrijp ons niet verkeerd: er valt veel te genieten bij de mix van Little Village-repertoire en wat solonummers van Lowe, Cooder en Hiatt. Bij die laatste gaat het natuurlijk om "Bring The Family"-songs, die met gemak de hoogtepunten vormen van de set. En aldoor speelt Cooder de sterren van de hemel, vooral op z'n slide.

"This 2010 issue is not a new album, it is a complete repackage of the album entitled "The Crazy Cajun Recordings" (1999). The material dates from 1973 and 1977, recorded with the famed Huey P. Meaux (aka the Crazy Cajun) when he wasnt touring with Clifton Chenier. These 20 tracks range from Landreths Lafayette, LA-styled take on the acoustic Delta blues solo and with a band that included a mandolin player, an electric bassist, and a drummer to his early electric experiments playing a meld of cajun-flavored soul, rock, and R&B. His later electric slide guitar fury style is all but absent here, but the acoustic slide work is particularly plentiful. Other styles of rural acoustic blues are represented by the Piedmont-styled Dont Cry for Me and Lookin for a Good Time (the latter played with a backing band). Theres some roadhouse boogie here as well in Baby Aint That Love and The Only One. In other words, there isnt anything about this collection that cant be recommended." (Thom Jurek, Allmusic)
"The variety of artists who have covered John Hiatt's songs is staggering. But the folk, country, and blues crowd have been the most commercially successful Hiatt interpreters, hence an entire album devoted to these genres is a logical, and even obvious, concept. "Rollin' Into Memphis", with its title seemingly derived from "Memphis in the Meantime," oddly a song that does NOT appear here, is a well-meaning and generally successful attempt to mine the blues and folk roots of his music and breathe new life into these tunes with imaginative rearrangements from an intriguing assortment of players. The album benefits greatly from utilizing the same backing band on all tracks. Although the singers run the gamut from folk (Odetta, Patty Larkin, Chris Smither) to blues (Raful Neal, Colin Linden) and even to zydeco and Cajun (C.J. "This album -- which, at times, recalls parts of Kate Bush's "Hounds Of Love" -- is also reminiscent of Bo Hansson's "Lord of the Rings", being a musical homage to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Arthurian novel The Mists of Avalon, much as Hanson's was a homage to Tolkien's trilogy. But Stivell's record is not instrumental -- rather, it has lots of songs sung partly in Breton and partly in English. It is essentially a progressive rock album (it could even have charted had he done it in the early-1970's), complete with electronic keyboard-driven passages, and a full rock band sharing space with Stivell's harps, bagpipes and tin whistles. Stivell's voice is something of an acquired taste, but his vocals are supported by a trio of guest singers and a small female chorus." Relatief korte set van net geen uur voor het Zwitserse TV-programma AVO sessions. Toen was net het goed ontvangen album "Beneath This Gruff Exterior" uit, waarop hij net als bij dit concert begeleid wordt door The Goners. Belangrijkste man in die groep is Sonny Landreth. Zijn vlammende slide-gitaarspel en Hiatt's bezield-gruizige zang maken dit samen met de prima opnamekwaliteit een genotvol uurtje. In 9 songs gaat Hiatt in vogelvlucht door zijn carrière. Zo speelt hij het titelnummer van "Riding With The King" uit 1983, liefst 3 songs van "Slow Turning" uit 1988 (indertijd ook met Sonny Landreth opgenomen) en twee songs van het net verschenen "Beneath This Gruff Exterior".
Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes -many found only recently- this historic 6-disc set is the definitive chronicle of the artist's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band. This brings together, for the first time ever, every salvageable recording from the tapes including recently discovered early gems recorded in the "Red Room" of Dylan's home in upstate New York. Garth Hudson worked closely with Canadian music archivist and producer Jan Haust to restore the deteriorating tapes to pristine sound, with much of this music preserved digitally for the first time. The decision was made to present these recordings as intact as possible. Also, unlike the official 1975 release, these performances are presented as close as possible to the way they were originally recorded and sounded back in the summer of 1967.
