"Waar "Blómi", het vorige album van Susanne Sundfør, al volop spiritualiteit ademde en je zelfs meenam naar sereniteit trekt ze die lijn op hier nog even flink wat door. Een wel heel indrukwekkende spirituele beleving is het gevolg. En waar de instrumentatie op "Blómi" nog behoorlijk uitgebreid was, hoor je deze keer slechts één instrument naast de stem van Sundfør en dat is het orgel van de Bragernes Kirke in Drammen, bij Oslo. Sundfør zocht de locatie uit en haar ideale muzikale partner vond ze in de Britse Kit Downes, een muzikant die zijn sporen al vele jaren binnen de jazz verdient als virtuoos en avontuurlijk toetsenman maar tevens tot één van de beste organisten wereldwijd gerekend kan worden. Hij schreef samen met Sundfør de composities voor het album. Sundfør heeft zich laten inspireren door de geschriften van Julian of Norwich, een kluizenaarster uit de 14e eeuw, met dezelfde titel als het album. Sundfør stuitte per toeval op de geschriften in een periode dat een dierbare vriendin ernstig ziek was. De teksten raken niet alleen de strikt mystieke kant van het werk van Julian van Norwich; ook de notie van Christus als vrouw sprak Sundfør aan, als inmiddels moeder van twee en al nadenkend over de betekenis van leven geven en moederschap. Niet gek dat je daar -goddelijke- liefde aan koppelt. Sundfør en Downes hebben elkaar gevonden in een aantal heel vanzelfsprekend klinkende bijna sacrale composities waarbij Downes optimaal de 38 stemmen van het orgel gebruikt, dan weer sereen als in "I It Am", dan weer sprankelend als in "What Are We". "This time the overall soundscape leans to a folk rock direction, in a 'Fairport Convention rebooted for the 21st century indie artist' sense. There are synths and loops along the way but they’re carefully woven into the band sound often led by Jim’s twangy electric guitar. And I’m quite surprised how well that particular sound fits the material; the tunes are either trad or just very old, but that twang guitar somehow feels very much at home in this material. "Loreena McKennitt trapte in maart '24 in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven een Europese tour ter ere van haar doorbraakalbum "The Visit" (1991) af. De show werd afgesloten met "Wild Mountain Thyme", waarbij de Canadese zangeres, harpist en pianist het publiek opriep om mee te zingen. McKennit is gewend in eigen land "Wild Mountain Thyme" uit honderden kelen tegelijk te horen galmen. Dat gebeurde in de zomer van 2023, toen ze op vier folkfestivals in Ontario speelde. De opnames daarvan resulteren in "The Road Back Home", een live-plaat die de new age-icoon zelf omschrijft als 'field recordings'. Klinkt toch net iets interessanter, en toegegeven: dit album bewijst niet alleen andermaal hoe goed McKennitt live nog altijd is, maar heeft ook meerwaarde door vooral songs te bieden die ze niet eerder op plaat ving. ""In Winter" is weer een schitterende nieuwe ster aan het firmament. De kracht de muziek van The Unthanks ligt in het zoeken naar thema’s, verhalen, muziekstijlen, experimenteren en het uitdragen van muzikale kunstvormen en poëzie. Hun muziek kan jazzy, orkestraal, gedragen, basaal folky, eenvoudig lieflijk, donker, romantisch of vrolijk zijn, maar melancholie is nooit ver weg. De emoties die teksten, oude melodieën en historische achtergronden oproepen zijn allemaal van invloed. In een artikel van Graeme Thomson kom je een heel rake tekst tegen: 'The Unthanks lijken folkmuziek op dezelfde manier te zien als Miles Davis jazz zag: als een springplank om bredere mogelijkheden te verkennen'. Op "In Winter" is dit zeker van toepassing. Het (dubbel) album met negentien songs pakt alles wat winter, winter maakt. Carols, duistere melodieën, oude verhalen en rituelen. Derde album van de Duits(talig)e folkgroep, uit 2005. De groep maakt gebruik van instrumenten als draailier, doedelzak, bouzouki en nyckelharpa, begeleid door vaak opzwepende percussie om een zo authentiek mogelijk met de natuur verbonden oergevoel op te roepen. "They're German, and they're sincere in what they do -- which is make modern folk music. They're so earnest that it's hard to make fun of them, even when so much of their music resembles an almost goth Enya with pop vocals (courtesy of two female singers). And they certainly dive in wholeheartedly, not afraid to tackle something from 16th century Portugal or a Sephardic Jewish song in between their own material -- which attempts to conjure up an ancient atmosphere. Lyrically, they try too hard and achieve a kind of juvenile minstrelsy that masquerades as atmosphere. Op deze verzamelaar is ook het nummer "Only Time" te vinden dat na de terroristische aanslagen in de Verenigde Staten op 9/11 gebruikt werd als achtergrondmuziek bij talloze tv- en radioreportages over de gebeurtenissen. De Limited deluxe CD/DVD bevat naast 4 extra tracks op de CD ook nog een DVD met hierop 13 tracks in 5.1 surround sound en maar liefst drie "making of" documentaires. Op de DVD is het geluid bovendien in 5.1 surround sound.
Fairport Convention is going on and on and on op hun alweer 29ste plaat. Simon Nicol en Dave Pegg behoren inmiddels tot de grootheden van de folkwereld. Op "Shuffle And Go" staan voornamelijk nieuwe nummers met als uitzondering "Jolly Springtime" van James Taylor.
Deze oprichter van de legendarische Byrds kompt op 3 oktober 2014 naar Enschede, en wel naar het Muziekcentrum. Dit is z'n meest recente solo-album, uit 2011: "This beautiful 8-panel package captures the golden age of sail, when wooden ships commanded the waves. The Irish vocal heritage combined with 12-string, 7-string, 6-string and bass guitars is enhanced with harmony, mandolin and banjo picking. Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes -many found only recently- this historic 6-disc set is the definitive chronicle of the artist's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band. This brings together, for the first time ever, every salvageable recording from the tapes including recently discovered early gems recorded in the "Red Room" of Dylan's home in upstate New York. Garth Hudson worked closely with Canadian music archivist and producer Jan Haust to restore the deteriorating tapes to pristine sound, with much of this music preserved digitally for the first time. The decision was made to present these recordings as intact as possible. Also, unlike the official 1975 release, these performances are presented as close as possible to the way they were originally recorded and sounded back in the summer of 1967.
