Het optreden dat de zanger/drummer in 2004 in Montreux gaf, was onderdeel van zijn 'eerste afscheidstournee'. De setlist, 24 nummers lang, is dan ook exact hetzelfde als op de in Parijs opgenomen live-DVD "Finally... The First Farewell Tour". Beginnende met een drumduet van Collins en Chester Thompson (met overeenkomsten met het duet dat de twee tijdens Genesis-tournees spelen) komen alle solo-hits vanaf "In The Air Tonight" voorbij. Zoals het bijna a capella "True Colors", dat hij met zeskoppige koor brengt. Die extra zangers, aangevuld met loeistrakke blazers, komen ook goed van pas in soulnummers als "Easy Lover" en "You Can't Hurry Love". Ook de basisband is 'top notch', met het van Genesis bekende duo Chester Thompson en gitarist Daryl Stuermer, naast o.a. baslegende Leland Sklar. Leuke bonus is het optreden met bigband uit 1996, o.l.v. Quincy Jones. Speciale arrangementen van solo- en Genesis-hits worden afgewisseld met enkele bigbandklassiekers en gastoptredens van Tony Bennett en David Sanborn.

"This 5-CD set contains some absolutely top-notch Basie. In the summer of 1958, Basie and the band were in Los Angeles for a month (including vocalist Joe Williams, and with a guest appearance on one number by Sammy Davis Jr). For the first fortnight, they played the Crescendo Club, where they were extensively recorded. The recording was done by a master engineer, Wally Heider. No-one could have done it better. Wally caught the band absolutely spot on (although some of Counts announcements are a bit under-miked not important). It is very striking to hear how much the guys in the band were clearly enjoying themselves (and probably thriving on the Californian sunshine during the day too). The numbers range from early Basie (such as Moten Swing, Jumpin at the Woodside and, naturally, One OClock Jump) through to material from the Atomic Basie album recorded a few months before. Op dit album werkt de gevierde jazz-zangeres Dee Dee Bridgewater samen met de jongere trompettist/bandleider Irvin Mayfield en zijn 18-koppige bigband The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. De 14 songs vormen samen een toch door bijna 300 jaar New Orleans-geschiedenis. Daarnaast zijn er prominente gasten. Dr. John kan natuurlijk op zo'n thema-album naar zijn hartje niet ontbreken en vertolkt de mede door zijn toedoen ontsterfelijk geworden Earl King-klassieker "Big Chief". Headhunters-percussionist is te horen in het nieuw-gecomponeerde "Congo Square", waarin de levendigheid van dit beroemde plein muzikaal is gevat. Het repertoire loopt verder uiteen van Harry Connick Jr.'s "One Fine Thing" tot Hoagy Carmichaels "New Orleans". Bridgewater trekt die al die songs op karakteristieke wijze naar zich toe.

"Het onvolprezen platenlabel Resonance Records is als geen ander in staat gebleken verloren gewaande concertopnamen op te duikelen en in opgepoetste staat en fraai verpakt op de markt te brengen. Hoogtepunt in hun catalogus is dit concert dat bassist Jaco Pastorius met zijn Word of Mouth Big Band in 1982 in New York gaf. Onder anderen Toots Thielemans (1922-2016) trad er op. Een deel ervan is destijds door de NPR op de radio uitgezonden, maar het complete concert bleef in dozen liggen. Pastorius verkeerde in uitmuntende vorm. Veel beter dan een paar maanden later in Japan, een concert waarvan veel opnamen bestaan, onder meer op Pastorius' album "Invitation" (1983). Je kunt zelfs wel stellen dat er geen plaat is die meer recht doet aan de kwalificaties dat hij de Paganini of de Jimi Hendrix van de basgitaar was. Luister alleen al naar het adembenemende "Sophisticated Lady". Pastorius' spel in het duet met Thielemans klinkt overtuigender dan op "Invitation". Kippenvel krijg je vervolgens als het orkest Thielemans' eigen "Bluesette" inzet." It was broadcast on NPR's Jazz Alive program, but this 2CD contains the entire performance, with more than 40 minutes of additional music. As his time with Weather Report wound down, Pastorius threw himself into Word of Mouth. A studio album was issued a year earlier, and versions of this outfit had played in Florida, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Pastorius assembled a who's who for this date. The core band featured Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Don Alias, and Othello Molineux (on steel drums). Wat een levendige, frivool, fris en strak klinkende set is dit! De heropgerichte legendarische fusion- en modern jazzgroep Steps Ahead speelt hier hoogtepunten uit het repertoire met de bekende WDR Big Band Cologne. Arrangeur Michael Abene weet wanneer hij ruimte moet geven en zorgt voor een grotendeels transparante sound, maar zorgt tegelijkertijd dat de crescendi genoeg stootkracht krijgen met bijv. spetterende blazers. Steps Ahead bestaat hier uit vibrafonist/oprichter Mike Mainieri met Bill Evans (altsaxofoon), Chuck Loeb (el. gitaar), Tom Kennedy (basgitaar) en Steve Smith (drums - ja diezelfde die ook bij de popgroep Journey speelt). Ook zijn er soli voor enkele bigband-leden, waaronder de Nederlandse trompettist Ruud Breuls en saxofonist Paul Heller.
"In between many collaborative albums, "Chairman Of The Board" (1959) was a rare chance for the orchestra to perform on its own, and listeners to hear how powerful the band could be when its concentration was undiverted. "Memories Ad-Lib" (1958) is an unusual session, featuring Basie exclusively on organ accompanying Joe Williams' vocals over a dozen numbers, mostly standards. Although Basie's recordings on organ were sporadic, his style is not at all different from the one he utilized at the piano, filling in the holes and providing just enough backing for his very fine singer. Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross had combined their voices to recreate the Count Basie Orchestra on their debut release "Sing A Song of Basie". For the follow-up "Sing Along..." (1958), they actually had the services of the Basie big band itself. The trio sings ten Basie classics - quite fascinating to hear. "Basie In London", recorded in 1956 in Gothenburg(!) represents the Basie band in a classic time period." (Allmusic)
Als zevende cd in de serie Treasures of Dutch Jazz presenteert het Nederlands Jazz Archief opnamen uit 1964-69 van het Orkest Ruud Bos, een vrijwel vergeten formatie die in verschillende bezettingen de fine fleur van de toenmalige Nederlandse jazz omvatte: onder anderen Piet Noordijk, Herman Schoonderwalt, Harry Verbeke, Ruud Brink, Toon van Vliet, Cees Smal, Ado Broodboom, Eddie Engels, Rudy Bosch, Frans Elsen, Cees Slinger, Misha Mengelberg, Jacques Schols, Rob Langereis, John Engels en Cees See.
Deze bijzondere combinatie was te aanschouwen op North Sea Jazz 2017: "De afgelopen twee jaar toerden trompettist Eric Vloeimans en de befaamde Marinierskapel der Konklijke Marine (ofwel the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy) langs de theaters in Nederland. Het bleek een groot succes te zijn. Bij Vloeimans gaat de liefde voor fanfares ver terug. Als kind liep hij al volledig uitgedost mee in een fanfarekapel en daar leerde hij ook noten lezen en dirigeren. Vloeimans en de Marinierskapel speelden in 2010 voor de eerste keer samen, in de Rotterdamse Doelen. Een jaar later volgde er een concert in het Concertgebouw van Amsterdam. Beiden spelen over de gehele wereld en die invloeden nemen ze nu mee naar het podium: van Oost-Europese folkmuziek tot hippe lounge. Het komt allemaal voorbij in het concert van deze twee giganten dat niet voor niets de titel "Around The World" heeft meegekregen." Bij het concert op North Sea Jazz bleek deze CD te koop, die is samengesteld uit opnamen uit voornoemde optredens.

"Quincy Jones was quite able to produce a full album featuring Henry Mancini's famous songs from movies and the small screen. This collection of the familiar and obscure Mancini done in 1964, preceded famed epic scores written by Jones from films The Pawnbroker and The Deadly Affair. It comprises several well-known hit tunes and a smattering of cuts not easily identifiable as the hummable and memorable Mancini classics. Taken from three separate sessions, the bands assembled by Jones are loaded, including Clark Terry, Ernie Royal, Snooky Young, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, and Seldon Powell, Drummer Osie Johnson plays on all tracks, pianist Bobby Scott is a central figure. A young saxophonist and flutist named Roland Kirk appears on four tracks, and the emerging vibraphonist Gary Burton is on another eight.
