"Although it is very much an opera for four singers, this is essentially Anna Netrebko's evening. She succeeds in dominating the action both by her singing and by her physical presence, using sudden, jerky movements to suggest Elvira's unhinged state. Eric Cutler makes a good cavalier hero, especially in the desperate plea of "Credeasi, misera!". As usual, the baritone and bass, Franco Vassallo and John Relyea, bring down the house with "Suoni la tromba" at the end of Act 2. Whether you consider the production quaint or merely traditional, it is something of a relief not to have to battle with an elaborate political concept. Patrick Summers conducts the Met forces always with consideration for the singers. The photography is excellent, and there are some intriguing glimpses of the singers backstage, including an interval feature in which Renee Fleming is the interviewer, chatting to Netrebko in her dressing-room." This new recording pays tribute to an ill-known, mysterious figure of 18th-century Naples: Prince Raimondo di Sangro. A soldier, scientist, poet, alchemist and freemason, he bequeathed us a palace and a magnificent chapel, the site of a tragedy that was at the origin of the murder committed by the great composer Gesualdo. This chapel still houses artistic and scientific works both beautiful and mysterious, which serve as an initiatory itinerary for the visitor. The intuition of Guido Morini and Marco Beasley was to use this itinerary and make it the dramatic framework for a singular, innovative work that they have entitled Solve et Coagula, an alchemist maxim meaning Dissolve and congeal. A veritable dramma per musica, this work calls on different historical creative processes in order to let us discover a unique story, featuring the rhythm of tarantellas, ostinati and mysterious fugues... Heruitgave uit 2011 van eerder in 1989 op CD uitgegeven productie van studioopnamen uit december 1985/januari 1986. Het libretto is niet bij de heruitgave gevoegd, maar er staat een verwijzing op de CD-hoes naar een on-line-versie ervan. Het boekje bevat wel een puntsgewijze samenvatting. Overigens krijgt deze uitvoering over het algemeen een niet meer dan 'gemiddelde' waardering. Essentieel voor Pavarotti-fans, dat zeker, want hij was in die jaren nog op de toppen van zijn kunnen.
Deze DVD productie is opgenomen in Ahoy', Rotterdam in januari 2002. Il Trovatore is de 10de grote operaproductie van Companions Opera, en van zo'n hoge kwaliteit dat het makkelijk kan concurreren met producties van de bekende operahuizen. Deze opmerkelijke productie kreeg zeer goede kritieken in de pers. Door toepassing van hoge video- en audiotechnieken wordt Verdi's drama op de best mogelijke manier bij u in de huiskamer gebracht. Leonard Bernstein leidt een sterrencast in deze opname uit 1978 van Beethovens enige opera. Uit de zeer uitgebreide recensie in Gramophone, ook uit 1978: "Bernstein has done it with a fine cast and the ideal orchestra. (...) Apart from René Kollo's ugly fortissimo the set has a lot to recommend it: strong atmosphere, plentiful musical detail, dialogue to appreciate, real characters and much fine singing. Throughout, Haenchen makes the music sound of its time, be it a light Mendelssohnian (or, perhaps, French) grace for the watery figures accompanying the Rhinedaughters, or the flexible, almost improvised recitative which carries the many conversations of this work. The opera is cunningly cast. As in Siegfried, veterans make their mark alongside newer-comers.
