"Gustavo Dudamel voerde de vier symfonieën van Ives steeds in combinatie met werk van Antonin Dvorák uit voordat hij ze met zijn Los Angeles Philharmonic opnam. Het verklaart ongetwijfeld de rijke romantische klank waarmee het orkest aan de reis door het symfonisch oeuvre van Ives begint in die eerste symfonie. En hoewel de vier genummerde symfonieën niet alle symfonieën van Ives zijn (hij schreef ook nog een New England Holiday Symphony en een Universe Symphony) weten Dudamel en zijn orkest de ontwikkeling van de componist glashelder te schetsen en ondertussen uitvoeringen neer te zetten om door een ringetje te halen. De Tweede Symfonie volgt nog logisch uit de Eerste, terwijl gaandeweg het gebruik van melodieën uit de volksmuziek toeneemt en de volkomen eigenzinnige dissonantengekte toeslaat." (classicstogo)

Om het jubileum te vieren combineert het strijkorkest Rudolf Barshai's kamerorkestbewerking van het Tiende strijkkwartet van Sjostakovitsj met een indrukwekkende Concertino uit 1948 van diens goede vriend Weinberg. Amsterdam Sinfonietta ontdekte dit nimmer uitgevoerde meesterwerk en bracht het in 2009 in première. Seaman gracefully yields to temptation and delivers performances of incredible sensuality, eliciting gorgeous playing from the English orchestra. Some listeners may find this to be too much of a good thing, and certainly Thomas Beecham and John Barbirolli found more elegance and tenderness and a Pantheistic love of nature in Delius than Seaman does. "Luis Humberto Salgado was an essentially self-taught Ecuadorian composer inspired equally by the folk music of his country and by currents in contemporary modernism. He defined himself as a ‘polytechnic’ composer, absorbing folk motifs and individual dances into an eclectic, vibrant and highly personal idiom. This can be heard in the Viola Sonata where the lively sanjuanito indigenous dance is evoked in music of sophisticated harmonies. The Cello Sonata is more neo-Classical, while Selene commemorates the moon landing of 1969 in striking, unconventional sonorities. Salgado’s Woodwind Quintet combines pentatonic scales and serial techniques to create a ‘polychrome fabric’." (naxos.com)
"Dirigent Joana Mallwitz legt met haar Konzerthausorchester Berlin het herkenbare en het jongere gezicht van Kurt Weill (19-1950) bloot. Herkenbaar snedig is de satirische balletzang in Die sieben Todsünden. De waanzinnige stem van Katharine Mehrling krijgt bijtend commentaar van het orkest. Dat hoor je terug in de Tweede symfonie van 2 jaar later, 'n opwindend stuk met verrassende tederheid, stekelige ironie en bombastische spierballen. De Eerste symfonie, gecomponeerd door een 21-jarige Weill, was door nonnen in hun klooster onttrokken aan het publieke oog, omdat Weill uit een Joodse familie kwam. Het veel later ontdekte werk bestaat uit vier gedeelten die qua sfeer verschillen, maar een doorlopend geheel zijn. Nauwelijks bekend is deze ‘Berliner Sinfonie’. Mallwitz smijt je met de eerste malende akkoorden in een blender waarin flarden van de cabareteske scherpschutter Weill voorbijzwiepen. "The Cello Concerto in C minor, Op. 43, dating from 1948, is parallel to Weinberg's mentor Shostakovich's works of enforced conservatism from that period, but is somehow more joyful and genuinely melodic. More interesting is the premiere recording of Symphony No. 20, Op. 150 (1988). It's a roughly symmetrical five-movement work, on a large orchestral canvas, with slow movements with continuous melody on the outside, scherzo-like pieces of contrasting character second and fourth, and an extremely unusual centerpiece that seems to lose its integrity as it goes along. Weinberg in his later years seems to have tried to pursue avenues suggested by Shostakovich's very personal late works, and this piece, down to the Mahlerian feel, is in that vein. It's not Shostakovich, but quite absorbing, and the performances by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra are clean and on top of Weinberg's long lines in the outer movements of the symphony. "The idea of an album of vocal and chamber works by Kaikhosru Sorabji might seem to miss the point of this composer, who is known for piano works on a grand scale, and indeed, most of the music here is receiving world premiere performances. Yet those already intrigued by Sorabji are likely to enjoy these works, which are of a piece with his piano music, not an odd sideline like, say, Donizetti's instrumental music. For one thing, where there is a piano present (played by the excellent Chappell Kingsland, who also wrote the informative annotations), it tends to have Sorabji's characteristic virtuosity. Sample the Trois poèmes for soprano and piano (1941) on texts by Paul Verlaine and Charles Baudelaire, where the combination of vocal line and athletic accompaniment produces a unique effect.(...)" In 1975 voor het Duitse TV-station ZDF gemaakte enscenering van het stuk. U ziet de musici en koren dus niet, maar een kleurrijke, haast Fellineske uitbeelding door acteurs, geregisseerd door Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. Als extra is op de DVD een interview met de in 1982 overleden componist toegevoegd.
"Nota bene in het Sjostakovitsj-jaar 2006 komt Philips met dit gloedvolle pleidooi voor de ietwat ondergewaardeerde symfonieën van Prokofiev (..). Deze live opgenomen cyclus van het London Symphony Orchestra onder leiding van Valery Gergiev (leider van het LSO vanaf 2007) was 'cd van de maand' bij The Gramophone (juni 2006). Een kleine vergelijking om de uitgave enigszins te kunnen plaatsen: in het indrukwekkende tweede deel van de Zesde Symfonie neemt Gergiev een tempo dat eigenlijk te snel is voor een largo. Iets dergelijks horen we ook in de tegenvallende uitvoering van Ashkenazy (Decca) van begin jaren negentig, waarbij deze pianist/dirigent het kennelijk niet kon laten om zich nadrukkelijk te profileren tegenover de slepende grandeur van Jarvi (Chandos) en Rostropovich (Erato). "Best of all, however, is the Third Symphony (1956‑57), an immaculately crafted four-movement essay in the form with not one wasted note throughout its 18-minute duration, and (once again) boasting a slow movement of genuinely touching eloquence. Its a captivating score which Ive already replayed a number of times and surely merits programming as a refreshing alternative to, say, Prokofievs indestructible Classical Symphony, whose elegant demeanour and freewheeling spirit it perhaps most closely resembles."
