Exclusieve Nederlandse release, ter nagedachtenis aan de dood van Baker, in mei 2013 precies 25 jaar geleden, ten gevolge van een val uit een hotelraam aan de Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam. Het merendeel van deze opnamen stammen uit de jaren '50 (vanaf 1952 tot 1960), aangevuld met een handvol opnamen uit de jaren '60 en twee uit 1977. Veel van Bakers bekende repertoire ("My Funny Valentine", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Let's Get Lost", "But Not Fore Me", etc. etc.) is in studio- of live-vorm aanwezig. Naast de trompettist/bugelist/zanger horen we o.a. Gerry Mulligan (baritonsax), het sextet van Art Pepper, tenorsaxofonist Stan Getz en pianist Russ Freeman. Van veel opnamen zijn de credits echter niet opgenomen in het boekje, dat ook een essay of andere beschrijvingen moet ontberen.

Each of them makes important contributions. Adams' baritone sax solo on "Alone Together" is one of the high points, while Herbie Mann and Bill Evans make their presence known on several cuts. Baker possessed one of the most melodious trumpets in jazz, compelling in its simplicity. Rarely extending his range above a single octave, he nonetheless had few peers when it came to slow, romantic ballads, which make up the playlist here. His characteristically soft approach is heard to good effect on "It Never Entered My Mind," where he works with the guitar of Kenny Burrell. Burrell and Baker also collaborate on a moving rendition of "September Song." "With the support of the American State Department, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including new members Joe Morello and Eugene Wright, began a major tour of Europe early in 1958. Their first concert in the Netherlands was held on 26 February in the legendary Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, usually reserved for performances of classical music. Since 1951 and the collaboration between Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, the band had gained a stunning reputation. In 1954, Dave Brubeck was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Rumor has it that Duke Ellington knocked on Brubeck?s hotel door to congratulate him. Brubeck is said to have responded, ?It should have been you.? He dedicated one of his most famous pieces, ?The Duke?, included on this album, to his fellow pianist. That winter evening of 1958, the four musicians, all in their late thirties, took the stage of the Concertgebouw. Zoals de 40 jaar jongere Duitse saxofonist Paul Heller, waarmee hij al jaren samenspeelt en die ook aanwezig was op zijn 80ste verjaardag. "Vibraphonist Cal Tjader released six well-received albums on Conord. The Best of the Concord Years draws from that storehouse to fill two discs with choice cuts. The arrangements and overall flavor flow easily from composition to composition. There's the sparkling arrangement of "Speak Softly," featuring Roger Glenn's atmospheric flute work, which is perfectly matched to Tjader's light touch on the vibes. There are also surprises like the Latin take on Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," with a fine vocal by Carmen McRae, and an extra mellow take on John Coltrane's "Naima." Pianist-composer Mark Levine provides both rhythmically intense chording for a piece like "Shoshana" and the gentlest of leads on "Naima," while steady hands like bassist Rob Fisher and percussionist Poncho Sanchez lay down the rhythmic underpinning so essential to Latin jazz." "Although this 1998 CD reissue features the Chet Baker Quartet (in what was a reunion session), it was originally released under pianist Russ Freeman's name. All but two of the eight songs on the set ("Love Nest" and "Lush Life") are compositions by the pianist and they often feature both challenging chord changes and swinging solos. Baker, who improvises on the date with a fair amount of fire while sticking to his middle register, emerges as the key soloist although Freeman sounds quite original within the genre; bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Shelly Manne play tastefully in quiet support of the lead voices. All of the music was previously reissued as part of the complete Chet Baker Quartet limited-edition Mosaic box set that has since gone out of print. Well worth exploring." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)
Jun Miyake (1958) is een Japanse componist. Zijn muziek ("Lilies in the Valley" and "The Here and After") werd gebruikt voor de soundtrack van de film "Pina". Miyake laat zich het liefst inspireren door verschillende genres en ideeën en combineert deze om een nieuwe sound te creëren. Voor de cd "Innocent Bossa in the mirror" verdiepte hij zich samen met de Amerikaanse producer, gitarist en zanger Arto Lindsay en de veelzijdige Braziliaanse muzikant Vinicius Cantuaria in de bossa nova. Jun Miyake: "When we got together and played it was as if we were messengers on a mission who were possessed by a Muse (...) just three people thrown together with the challenge to create NOW!".
