"Naar aanleiding van de wereldtentoonstelling, die in 1998 in Lissabon gehouden is, heeft het Portugese label Tradisom een twaalftal cd's uitgebracht met muziek uit de kolonies die Portugal tijdens haar befaamde ontdekkingsreizen (vanaf de 15e eeuw) gesticht heeft. De cd-boekjes bevatten mooie kleurenfoto's en uitgebreide historische en culturele uitleg in de Portugese en Engelse taal. De Portugese invloed reikte van het Zuid-Amerikaanse Brazilië tot de Aziatische eilanden Sri Lanka en Timor. Het is interessant te bemerken hoe de versmelting van Portugese muziek met inheemse muziek gezorgd heeft voor nieuwe klanken. De cd met muziek uit Timor is nog het meest afwisselend, met signaalmuziek op buffelhoorn, muziek tijdens politieke demonstraties en (katholieke) ceremonies, dansmuziek en liefdesliederen." 'In the middle of nowhere' of beter gezegd, midden in de leegte van de woestijn, de Sahara in het zuiden van Libië, ligt de oase Féwet. De oase die de locale bevolking, Berbers, in staat stelt in de woestijn te overleven. Een samenleving waarin voor alle werkzaamheden vakmanschap is vereist. In het in stand houden en overleven van deze levensstijl speelt de muziek een belangrijke rol. Opnamen van de muziek die Indiase slangenbezweerders gebruiken. Het instrument dat hiervoor bij uitstek gebruikt wordt is hier uitgebreid te horen: de 'been' of 'murli' of 'pungi'. Dit is een instrument met twee fluiten die uitkomen in een reservoir dat is gemaakt van een gedroogde kalebas. Het instrument wordt zonder pauzes bespeeld, waarbij de muzikant gebruik maakt van circulaire ademhalingstechnieken. Op de CD horen we ook percussie-begeleiding en door dansers gemaakte ritmische geluiden.

Situated along the banks of the Kaveri (Cauvery) River, Tanjore (or Thanjavur) sits in one of India's most fertile agricultural regions. On this CD, the Carnatic diva Aruna Sairam gives voice to this song form. Meanwhile, the music on "Minstrels and Lovers" is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millenniums worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the projects artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. "After the rush of miners to the urban centers of South Africa at the end of the 19th century, some Zulu music, long played on musical bows, was transferred to a new instrument -- guitar. The entertainment usually took place in the single-sex hostels where the miners lived. These tracks were recorded in 1988 and 1996 in Durban, South Africa in such a single-sex hostel. This really is roots music, from the comb and concertina duet of "Kam and Kossetina" to "Gumboot 1996," which is fairly self-explanatory. Guitar plays an understandably major part, with both Albert Nene and Blanket Mkhize offering solos, while more ensemble-oriented pieces like "Gumboot 1993" team guitar with accordion and violin. It's not professional music; these are people playing for recreation, and without thinking carrying on something that's a new tradition. It's fascinating stuff, without a doubt, an insight into something most listeners never even knew existed -- and it's thoroughly enjoyable, too." (Allmusic)
De Banda Linda is een kleine stam die in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek leeft. Ze staan bekend om hun typische muziekstijl, met lange houten pijpen die een enkele toon produceren. De Italiaanse componist Luciano Berio omschreef de gemeenschap als 'zeer muzikaal'.
"Possibly the world's greatest balafon player, El Hadj Djely Sory Kouyate didn't record his first album, Anthologie du Balafon Mandigue, Vol. 1, until he had reached his 73rd birthday. Despite his age, the album showcased his virtuosic playing and imaginative melodies. Accompanied by Touma Moudo Kouyate (second balafon), Ahmadou Camara (bolon), Samba Woury Barry (sokko), Sadio Diallo (buru), and Makan Camara (tunni), Kouyate cast his intertwining melodic spell. According to the liner notes of his debut album, "some say that in human memory no one has known such virtuosity on balafon in the Mande homeland."" (Bron Allmusic). Een collectie Schotse folk songs, plus ook wat instrumentale muziek, uit Aberdeenshire en van De Hebriden (eilandengroep voor de kust van West-Schotland). De opnamen zijn gemaakt door de beroemde musicoloog Alan Lomax, met hulp van Calum MacLean en Hamish Henderson in 1951. In 1968 werden deze opnamen al eens op vinyl uitgebracht. We horen een hele rij zangers en zangeressen veelal onbegeleid deze van generatie op generatie overgeleverde liederen zingen.
