"The word Biscantorat is coined from the old Latin proverb qui cantat bis orat (whoever sings, prays twice), and the CD features a mix of song, chant and spoken word, tracing the course of the liturgical year from Advent through Pentecost. The poet John O'Donoghue recites sonnets and the Glenstal monk Mark Patrick Hederman offers "an invitation for the listener to meditate with us". In fact Biscantorat is intended to be a sort of aural prayer book. Those who took part hope the recording will offer a bridge for people who feel disillusioned by the institutional structure of the church and who seek a return to reflection in their own personal space. "De Paus van Amsterdam, zo typeert biograaf Marc van Dijk theoloog, dichter, liturgie- en kerkvernieuwer Huub Oosterhuis. Zondag 9 april 2023, Eerste Paasdag, overleed hij, 89 jaar oud. Als jonge priester en jezuïet maakte Oosterhuis in de jaren zestig naam als tekstdichter. Of hij niet eens wat liedjes kon schrijven ‘iets met bijbel erin’, vraagt zijn meerdere hem. Tot in de huidige tijd gaan her en der groepen gelovigen, binnen de Bijbels-katholieke traditie, 'hun eigen weg’ met steevast veel Oosterhuis op het liedrepertoire.In 2002 houdt Oosterhuis een indrukwekkende preek bij het overlijden van goede vriend prins Claus. De bijval en de waardering voor die preek is enorm, alsof Oosterhuis in zijn eentje de licht culturele ontsporing van dat moment corrigeert. "Liturgische muziek heeft een speciale functie in religieuze diensten. U kunt hierbij onder andere denken aan Christelijke kerkmuziek, Joodse rabbijnen of Russisch-orthodoxe muziek. Het grootste deel van het genre wordt gevormd uit cd’s met gregoriaanse muziek. Deze muziek hoort bij de oudste westerse muziek die bekend is. Gregoriaanse muziek vindt haar plaats in twee soorten diensten: de Mis en het Officie (getijdengebed). De Mis is de dienst die ook vandaag de dag nog elke zondag in de kerk wordt gevierd. " The Psalms and songs of the Bible are of course well-known to all Bible students. What is not so commonly known is that all of Hebrew Scripture was originally meant to be sung -- and that to instrumental accompaniment. "Your statutes have been my *zemirot* (songs accompanied by harp or lyre) in the house of my pilgrimage" (Psalm 119:54). The vocal melodies are said to be contained in the "musical accents" (*te`amim*) of the Hebrew Masoretic Text. Suzanne Haik-Vantoura (d. September 22, 2000) sought to rediscover the original musical meaning of the *te`amim*, which have been given many different musical interpretations by the synagogue communities. Modern instruments are used; the instrumental arrangements and choral harmonies are meant to evoke, not to reconstruct, the original settings. The marvelous renditions of Pss. 23, 24 and 122, plus the Elegy of David, alone make the purchase worthwhile. (John Wheeler)
