"De 9 stukken die hij voor het album schreef (met simpele titels als "One", "Two", "Three"…) hebben een fijn loom en ingetogen karakter en klinken als in een concert opgenomen, zo puur. Bassisten eigen, spelen ze op hun eigen albums een prominente maar nooit een hoofdrol en waarom zou je ook, als je als blazers Mike Rodriquez en Chris Cheek hebt die zowel samen als solerend geweldig klinken? Gitarist Steve Cardenas en pianist Gil Goldstein hebben eenzelfde chemie en pakken in de andere stukken net zo gemakkelijk die rol van het blazersduo over. Het levert constant fraaie melodische momenten op die Swallows stukken, geschreven na de dood van zijn partner, een diepe emotionele lading geven. Swallow koos, waar hij juist ook bekend staat om zijn vrije spel, voor dit album voor strakke structuren en de melancholieke sfeer waar zijn stukken in gevat zijn, past daar uitstekend bij. "Here is an instrumental duo straight out of Alice's wonderland: trumpet and accordion. You heard right. "Back On The Road Again" features only two artists: trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and accordionist Will Holshouser. It is an extraordinary alliance by any measure, and if they were not so preposterously good at what they do, there is no way it could ever work. But it does! The demand to implant variety into every number lands for the most part on Holshouser's shoulders, as the accordion can produce a number of seemingly disparate sounds, whereas the trumpet sounds basically like a trumpet—unless muted, which is never the case here. So Vloeimans governs the melodic sphere while Holshouser provides the counterpoint, serving as navigator and rhythm section. As to solos, they are respectable, but improvisation may not be what the duo's audiences come to hear. "Met het solo opgenomen "Of The Earth" komt Shabaka (Hutchings) wederom met een album waarin hij muzikaal een andere afslag pakt. Een album waar het muzikale avontuur vanaf spat en dat even inspirerend als intrigerend klinkt. "Of The Earth" is een album waarop Shabaka vol experimenteert met geluiden en effecten zodat er een sfeer en sound ontstaat die even avontuurlijk als origineel is en die tegelijkertijd ook heel organisch en puur klinkt. De stukken die op het album te horen zijn, bevatten een heerlijke mishmash aan coole stijlen die door Shabaka subliem in steeds weer frisse composities vorm zijn gegeven. Elf tracks lang avontuur waarop Shakaba zelfs rapt, zoals hij het zelf noemt, maar die ik meer spoken word vind, weliswaar nog licht door een blender, maar de teksten zijn duidelijk. Bijzonder knap hoe hij alle instrumenten over elkaar heen legt, een mooie bandsound creëert terwijl hij dat toch echt allemaal zelf bespeelt. Een muzikale ontdekkingstocht." "Released on Hubro, an Oslo label that concentrates on jazz and improvised music, "Morning" is the recording of a first meeting between a group of established, curious and creative European musicians. Norwegians Mats Eilertsen on bass, Per Oddvar Johansen on drums and pianist Kjetil Mulelid met Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers for a couple of days at the drummer’s home. The resulting recording has an air of spontaneity and thoughtfulness, and is a compelling document. Sprangers’ saxophone is central to the ensemble sound. A warm, breathy tone with just the hint of a long slow vibrato, in many of the pieces there’s a sense of her pointing the way, or leading the quartet into an exploration of a melodic idea, even if sometimes textures and colours have been sketched first by piano or the rustling of Johansen at the kit. "Even een ontregelend moment als na de ijle, oosterse klanken van "Luxabundance" die uit Eric Vloeimans’ trompet vloeien een snaarinstrument opklinkt. Tot meteen het besef indaalt dat Egbert Derix hier de snaren van een vleugel met zijn handen bespeelt. Niet lang daarna nemen de vertrouwde toetsen het over. Het tweede deel van "Gardens Of Abundance II" bestaat uit live-opnames die een decennium beslaan en trompettist en pianist opnamen in Nijmegen, Ottersum, Driehuis, Naarden en Hilversum. Van voornoemde compositie, via het kamerbrede, bijna 25 minuten klokkende "Treehouse" dat een breed klankenpalet beslaat tot afsluiters "Satie Walsje" en "Odilea", laten de avontuurlijke instrumentalisten in hun grotendeels geïmproviseerde stukken horen steeds meer met elkaar verweven te raken. De goede verstaander hoort niettemin dat die magische symbiose al tijdens de vroegste opnames in het Ottersumse Roepaen tastbaar aanwezig was." (Jazzism)
""Garden I" is de eerste registratie van improvisatie van het duo, tijdens één van de optredens in Nijmegen. Het begint in een wat onheilspellende sfeer als Derix de snaren in de vleugelkast beroert zonder daarbij het toetsen mechaniek te gebruiken. Heel delicaat en staccato volgen korte tonen elkaar op terwijl het hout van de vleugelkast wordt ingezet als percussie. Langzaam ontvouwt zich een fijne geïmproviseerde melodielijn, waar Vloeimans met een fijngevoelige partij op inspeelt. Het duo voelt elkaar perfect aan en er wordt moeiteloos naar andere toonladders getransponeerd. "Argante", afkomstig van Derix zijn album "Falco" is een heerlijk ritmisch stuk, met syncopen en een meeslepende melodielijn. Ook het titelnummer van het hiervoor genoemde album passeert de revue, naast onder andere het zo mooie en subtiele stuk "The Wanderer" van Vloeimans waarin op een prachtige wijze een spanning wordt opgebouwd tot een ruige climax, waarna het weer langzaam verstilt." "The versatility and inventive spirit of American guitarist and composer Julian Lage have led him to collaborations with transcendental saxophonist Charles Lloyd, iconic vibraphonist Gary Burton, visionary composer and saxophonist John Zorn, and guitarist-improviser Nels Cline, with whom he released an excellent contemporary duo session in 2014. The follow-up to "Speak To Me" (Blue Note, 2024), "Scenes From Above" is a nine-track set of originals—written during what Lage calls a 'writing spring'—and dedicated to his father, Mario Lage. The album retains Jorge Roeder on bass while adding keyboardist John Medeski and drummer Kenny Wollesen. On six tracks, the core quartet expands into a quintet with pianist Patrick Warren, who also contributes bells, dulcitone, percussion, and strings. Not particularly groundbreaking or deeply memorable, "Scenes From Above" nonetheless brings the intimate chemistry of Lage’s new group into clear focus." (JazzTrail)
"Trompettist, componist en bandleider Suzan Veneman speelt in diverse ensembles en komt nu onder eigen naam met haar derde album, "The Art Of Letting Go". Het is na "Migrations Of the Mind" (2019) het tweede dat ze maakte met haar sextet en het mag gerust tot de sterkste Nederlandse jazzalbums van 2025 worden gerekend. De breed uitgesponnen composities vermijden elk cliché, elk stuk sprankelt van de ideeën. Pianist Timothy Banchet gaat in het openingsnummer "Shadow Self" alle kanten op, Veneman brengt met haar solo licht in het donker beginnende "The Longest Night" en overtreft zichzelf in de wonderschone ballad "Promise Me". In "Cling" schakelt Banchet onverwacht over op Fender Rhodes en duwt het nummer zo naar een andere sfeer. Saxofonist Jasper van Damme geeft Veneman regelmatig repliek met fraaie solo’s. ""Necessary Fictions" is het album geworden waarop Chris Illingworth (piano, synths), Nick Blacka (contrabas, basgitaar, synths) en Jon Scott (drums) GoGo Penguin uitvinden. Natuurlijk is hun sound herkenbaar (die sterke pianolijnen, die krachtige en coole baspartijen en die atypische drumpartijen) maar hun zevende album duikt weer vol het avontuur in. Illingworth heeft de synthesizers ontdekt en gebruikt deze gloedvol en Blacka en Scott zijn in bloedvorm. Vanaf de geweldige openingstrack "Umbra" is het duidelijk dat het trio terug is waar het ons met het gelijknamige vijfde album (hun beste met Rob Turner) uit 2020 achterliet. Het avontuur en het volle spelplezier zijn terug en daarmee de emoties en al die steeds weer zo fantastische op- en uitbouw die hun tracks zo onweerstaanbaar maken. "Necessary Fictions" is GoGo Penguin terug in de allergrootste vorm. Het is het album dat het nieuwe trio nu definitief naar de hoogste toppen brengt. Meesterlijke plaat." "In "Lullaby", Eick has conceived eight compositions for jazz quartet that refuse to be tied to any musical implications that may be drawn from the albums title, and stays away from lullabies to develop an impassioned set that is as tough as it is tender. Part of this new sound is due to new drummer Hans Hulbækmo who has wasted no time in getting settled into the quartet and the material, band bringing an edge to the music that ensures flow and momentum are maintained as on the opening "September". Eick’s lyrical and delicate trumpet with its hints of a more vocalised tone are to the fore, as is a flowing solo from pianist Kristjan Randalu all gently propelled along by the drummer who gives the impression of breaking loose at any time." "De IJslandse contrabassist Gulli Gudmundsson speelt al jaren in Nederland. Sinds enige tijd vormt hij ook een duo met pianist Jeroen van Vliet, die ook plaats heeft genomen in het trio dat Gudmundsson voor zijn album "Flód Og Fjara" (IJslands voor eb en vloed) heeft gevormd. Derde man is trompettist Koen Smits, die op dit mooie album misschien wel de grootste verrassing is. Zijn lyrische geluid heeft wel wat weg van dat van de Noor Arve Henriksen, wat goed past bij de Scandinavische sfeer die het album oproept. "Flód Og Fjara" klinkt als opgenomen voor het ECM-label. En dat is een compliment. De merendeels eigen composities laten alle ruimte voor mooi, afgewogen soleerwerk. Je hoort hoe goed Van Vliet en Gudmundsson op elkaar zijn ingespeeld, maar het is Smits die de meeste aandacht naar zich toetrekt.
