'John Rutter's 1985 recording was the first to use the 1893 version, which was scored for strings, harp, timpani, horns, trumpets, and organ. This version is essentially a chamber work, and Rutter scales the chorus down in size to match the intimacy of the orchestration. The result is a more austere-sounding work, but one whose clarity and purity are revealed with fresh insight. Rutter's performance is notable for its spare, clean linearity; it achieves plenty of feeling without the Romantic richness of the full orchestra. The most striking innovation here is Schuberts typically Romantic use of modulations, whereby the music suddenly takes unexpected directions. The opening of the Kyrie, with its warm blend of wind instruments, immediately signals a higher level of creativity and artistry than the D678 and the trio Et incarnatus est for soprano and two tenors in the Credo is sublime'. Mozart's requiem bleef onvoltooid en is tot op de dag van vandaag 'voer' voor musicologen. Volgens Richard Maunder detoneren het Sanctus en Benedictus, voltooid door Mozart's leerling Süssmayer, zozeer in de geniale partituur, dat ze beter kunnen worden weggelaten. Chistopher Hogwood voerde deze versie uit in 1984. Hij deed ook een duit in het authentieke zakje en werkte met een klein orkest, zoals Mozart die voor ogen stond in zijn arrangementen van Händels oratoria, en, zoals toen gebruikelijk in de kerkelijke traditie: jongenssopranen. Het resultaat is een intieme, heldere, volgens sommige fijnproevers, ongeëvenaarde interpretatie van Mozarts meesterwerk, ondanks de nu verouderde opnametechnieken.
It makes an apt and generous coupling to have the Faure Requiem alongside the closely related Durufle work. Though soloists appear in only six out of 16 movements in all, having star singers certainly adds to the attractions, when both Cecilia Bartoli and Bryn Terfel sing with fervour, bringing out the word-meaning dramatically to defy any idea that these are just sweetly reflective pieces. That is particularly true of the Durufle performance, where in the third movement, 'Domine Jesu Christe', and again in the 'Dies illa' section of the 'Libera me', Terfel finds an element of violence, apt for the words, matched by the urgency, wildness even, of Chung's conducting at such points. 'Hercules was first performed in 1745 in the manner of an oratorio, but its inherently theatrical nature is revealed in Handels description of it as a musical drama. This performance was recorded in 1983, and it may be that Gardiner would choose rather different-sounding soloists today: at any rate, the rich and steely voices of Sarah Walker and John Tomlinson sound somewhat at odds with the lighter, transparent orchestral and choral textures. That said, theres no denying Walkers impressive characterisation of Dejanira, though Tomlinson rather hams up the role of Hercules. Anthony Rolfe Johnson is outstanding, bringing the minor role of Hyllus vividly to life in just three arias. Here and there Gardiner holds back the dramatic thrust, with some deliberate recitatives, and one or two long pauses between items, but the contributions he extracts from the choir and orchestra are superb'. De gelovige Dvorák was verheugd toen een bevriende architect hem vroeg om een mis. Bij zijn kasteel had deze architect een nieuwe kapel gebouwd, die moest worden ingewijd. Hun beide echtgenotes soleerden in de Mis. Deze was oorspronkelijk heel bescheiden van opzet. Later zou Dvorák van het werk een zeer succesvolle grote versie maken voor orkest. Leonard Bernstein is de zoon van de Russische Joden Sam Bernstein en Jennie die in 1908 hun sjtetl ontvluchtten om de dienstplicht te ontlopen in het toen nog tsaristische Rusland. Hij werd voor het eerst bekend toen hij in 1943 bij een concert te New York als dirigent inviel voor de zieke Bruno Walter. Hij componeerde in de jaren veertig diverse musicals, die succesvol draaiden op Broadway. In de jaren vijftig dirigeerde hij een keer zo goed als onvoorbereid aan La Scala te Milaan de Medea van Luigi Cherubini met Maria Callas in de hoofdrol. Van 1958 tot 1969 was Bernstein eerste dirigent en artistiek leider van de New York Philharmonic. Na 1969 legde hij zich ook toe op componeren. Jackie Kennedy gaf in 1971 opdracht tot het componeren van 'Mass', een onvoorstelbare mengeling van religieuze en profane invloeden, van Bach en muzikale komedie tot rock en elektronische muziek.
Joan Cererols (1618-1680) was een Catalaanse componist en monnik. Zijn Missa de Batalla viert de Catalaanse verovering van het Koninkrijk Napels. Het bijzondere van deze opname is dat de werken van Cererols worden uitgevoerd door de Escolania & Capella de Música Montserrat, het koor waarvan Cererols eeuwen eerder zelf deel uitmaakte.
Mozart schreef dit opera-achtige oratorium toen hij 11 jaar oud was. Het was zijn eerste betaalde compositieopdracht. Deel 2 werd door Michael Haydn geschreven en deel 3 door Cajetan Adigasser. De laatste twee delen zijn echter verdwenen. Het stuk werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in het paleis van de aartsbisschop in Salzburg op 12 maart 1767.
'Christian Friedrich Ruppe (1753-1826), afkomstig uit Salzungen in Thüringen, werd in 1790 universiteitskapelmeester in Leiden. Ook was hij organist van de Lutherse Kerk. Zijn oeuvre omvat veel kamermuziekwerken, liederen en kerkcantates. Twee cantates zijn in 1987 gevonden in het archief van het Heilige Geest- of Arme Wees- en Kinderhuis in Leiden. In 1796 werd op initiatief van Ruppe een weeshuiskoor opgericht; iets dat in het buitenland heel gewoon was. Het was een gemengd koor, maar zonder tenoren. Voor dit koor componeerde Ruppe een Kerst- en Paascantate. Zijn stijl is sterk beïnvloed door de opéra comique vooral wat betreft ritmische en dynamische wendingen. Er is weinig bekend over de protestantse muziek in de klassieke periode. De cd is dan ook een document voor de Nederlandse muziekgeschiedenis'.(Bron: L.W., Muziekweb).
