Primo Riccitelli (9 augustus 1875 – 27 maart 1941) was een Italiaanse componist. Hij werd geboren als een van zes kinderen in het dorp Cognoli, Campli, in de regio Abruzzo in Italië. Zijn vader, Giuseppe, was een kleine landeigenaar en zijn moeder, Maria Maiaroli, een huisvrouw. Primo Riccitelli begon zijn studie in de stad Teramo en stapte vervolgens over naar het Rossini Conservatorium in Pesaro, waar hij al snel de protégé werd van Pietro Mascagni. Hij is misschien het best bekend om twee opera's, I Compagnacci en Madonna Oretta. . De eenakter ‘I Compagnacci’ werd opgevoerd in Rome en in het Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, en werd in 2011 in concert uitgevoerd door Teatro Grattacielo in New York City. Alle sporen van verschillende andere opera's van Primo Riccitelli zijn verloren gegaan. Na een kort ziekbed stierf Riccitelli op 27 maart 1941 in Giulianova, waar hij nu begraven ligt. De raadselachtige opera Pelléas et Mélisande is tegelijkertijd zo iriserend als een opaal en zo sinister als een middernachtelijk spookslot. François-Xavier Roth werd al vroeg in het diepe gegooid toen hij als beginnend dirigent deze complexe opera simpelweg maar te dirigeren had. Achteraf bekeken was het misschien wel goed dat hij zich zonder al te veel scrupules door de partituur heen moest worstelen. Twintig jaar later heeft hij veel meer ervaring, dankzij de vele uitvoeringen met Les Siècles. Dit ensemble bedient zich, zoals bekend, van historische instrumenten. Volgens Roth horen we daardoor meer kleur en resonans, wat ook de relatie met de zangstemmen ten goede komt. Pelléas wordt hier overigens gezongen door een tenor (Julien Behr), en niet door een lichte bariton (zoals voorgeschreven). De rol van Mélisande (Vannina Santoni) klinkt volwassener en minder fragiel dan we van andere uitvoeringen gewend zijn. Verder bevat de uitvoering een paar extra maten extra die in 1902 door censuur sneuvelden.|
""The Spanish lady" is an unfinished opera in two acts with a libretto by Sir Barry Jackson, based on the play "The Devil is an Ass" by Ben Jonson. Elgar seriously considered composing an opera on a number of occasions but always claimed to be held back by the lack of a suitable subject and librettist. In his last years, Elgar, living in virtual retirement in Worcester, established a friendship with Sir Barry Jackson. This friendship, plus encouragement from George Bernard Shaw, led Elgar to resurrect an idea for an opera based on "The Devil is an Ass", a play by Ben Jonson satirising Jacobean society and mores. Elgar settled on the more operatic title of The Spanish Lady and set to work on sketches for the opera. At this time, he was also working on the Third Symphony. Elgar died leaving the opera and the symphony unfinished. Dr Young's reconstruction has been recorded and was issued on CD with the October 1995 of BBC Music magazine." (Elgar.org)
Risurrezione (Wederopstanding) is een opera of dramma in vier bedrijven van Franco Alfano. Het libretto werd geschreven door Camillo Antona Traversi en Cesare Hanau (alleen Hanau ondertekende het), gebaseerd op de roman Wederopstanding uit 1899 van Leo Tolstoj. De eerste uitvoering vond plaats op 30 november 1904 in het Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turijn, Italië. Risurrezione was het meest succesvolle werk van Alfano. Born in Vienna in 1871, as a composer he won the support of both Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler, although he is best known perhaps for being Schoenberg's brother-in-law. His music is emphatically late (very late) Romantic. The story is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, "A Princess rejects a suitor". Disguised as a gipsy, the rejected lover returns, this time capturing her heart while also extricating her from the sheltered environs of her palace. The soprano Eva Johansson is radiant as the Princess, while Kurt Westi is a fine, strong Prince. Graf captures Zemlinsky's emotional shadings perfectly; although a fairy tale, Graf realises that dark fairy tale is very much a real thing, and it's right here in Zemlinsky's writing. "Voor Strauss’ tweede opera, getiteld "Feuersnot", leverde Ernst von Wolzogen het libretto, subtiel aangeduid als ‘Singgedicht’, om zodoende de link naar Hans Sachs te benadrukken. "Feuersnot" beleefde zijn première op 21 november 1901 in Dresden als eerste van in totaal negen Strauss-premières. Na een aanvankelijk succes wist het werk echter geen repertoire te houden. Vandaar dat ook zij die redelijk ingewijd zijn in Strauss’ werk niet zelden menen dat "Salome" zijn eerste opera is. Muzikaal hangt het stuk in tussen het werk van een componist uit de negentiende eeuw en een componist die korte tijd later de wereld zal doen opschrikken met zijn "Salome". "Janácek's instinct and sympathy for rural life comes most clearly into focus with The Cunning Little Vixen (Brno, 1924), in which he transformed a newspaper cartoon strip into an affirmation of the cycle of life. Of course the rustic characters and the various animals and birds, who together comprise the cast list, afford splendid opportunities for designers. But the music is inspired too, in particular the glorious sunrise sequence and the moving conclusion in which the young vixen appears and succeeds her dead mother, thus confirming the renewal of life. Václav Neumann's recording with the Czech Philharmonic and an all-Czech cast dates from 1979, during his extended tenure as chief conductor. "Toen Alexander Zemlinsky in 1938 vanwege de invasie van de Duitse troepen in Oostenrijk naar de Verenigde Staten vluchtte, bevond zich in zijn koffer een eerste aanzet tot de opera "Der König Kandaules", naar "Le roi Candaule" van André Gide. Een half jaar na zijn aankomst in New York werd de componist echter ziek, waardoor hij niet in staat was de opera te voltooien. Dat "Der König Kandaules" inmiddels toch op cd is verschenen, is dan ook te danken aan reconstructie en instrumentatie van de onvoltooid gebleven partituur door Anony Beaumont. "As is so often the case with these things, you spend half your life with no recorded version of a particular work and then all of a sudden it comes in duplicate. Thus, Giordano’s Siberia was out of bounds and inaccessible until a live recording from Martina Franca in Italy opened up the borders, and now we are back with it in a newly released performance dating from 1973. And perhaps most decisive, this 1973 performance is free from stage noises, which in the live recording is a continual vexation; another tiresome feature is that the voices carry a halo of stage resonance around with them while the orchestra plays within a different acoustic. On the strength of this I would even suggest that those who have already bought might consider it worthwhile to buy again. Francesca da Rimini, op. 25 is een opera in twee bedrijven van Sergej Rachmaninov op een Russisch libretto van Modest Tsjaikovski.De opera is gebaseerd op het bekende verhaal van Francesca da Rimini uit de vijfde canto (zang) van Dantes episch gedicht Het Inferno (het eerste deel van La Divina Commedia). Rachmaninov had het liefdesduet tussen Francesca en Paolo al in 1900 gecomponeerd, maar hervatte het werk aan deze opera niet eerder dan 1904.
