Juan Leovigildo ("Leo") Brouwer (Havana, 1 maart 1939) is een Cubaans componist, gitarist en dirigent. (...) "De samenstelling van dit ensemble werd aanvankelijk bepaald door de Sonate voor fluit, viool en harp van Debussy. Na de uitbreiding van het trio met hobo en cello besluit het huidige kwintet zich verder te verdiepen in weinig bekend materiaal. De eerste CD van Le Bateau Ivre presenteert hun muzikale ontdekkingen uit de jaren 1920-40. Het meest opvallende aan deze composities zijn voornamelijk de verrassende klankcombinaties die fluit en hobo met harp, viool en cello vormen, zoals in het sfeervolle Quintette (1926) van Jean Cras (1879-1932). De uitdagingen van de compromisloze twintigste-eeuwse muzikale avant-garde zijn ruim vertegenwoordigd in scherpe contrasten, snijdende dissonanten en pittige ritmes van Le Chant de Linos (1944) van Andr'e Jolivet (1905-1974) en de cyclus Marionettes (1937) van de Hongaar L?zl?Lajtha (1892-1963). Bax’s interest in the viola was aroused when he was a student at the Royal Academy of Music by the presence on the staff of the great English violist Lionel Tertis. It was Tertis who gave the first performances of the three pieces with piano recorded here, as well as the Phantasy for viola and orchestra, and it was for him that Bax began writing a second Viola Sonata in about 1933, though it was finally abandoned, with some of the material being used in the Sixth Symphony.
