"Behind the very common name of Hans Huber is one of the strongest compositional talents that Switzerland produced during the course of the 19th century. Eight symphonies, four piano concertos, five operas, as well as oratorios, cantatas, and a large number of chamber music works are part of the impressive oeuvre of this man. In this recording, we hear his relatively late quintets for piano and strings – two highly contrasting works that would have made Johannes Brahms stroke his beard approvingly. The dramatic power of Opus 111 and the capricious playfulness of Opus 125 would have probably reminded him of a transition or two; on the other hand, the autonomy of Huber’s invention would have pleased him favorably – and he could only have wished for interpreters like those in our recording." De Nederlandse pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren studeerde bij Jan Wijn (solo) en Ludmilla Baslawskaja (kamermuziek) aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Als liedbegeleider volgde hij lessen bij Rudolf Jansen en Graham Johnson. Maurice Lammerts van Bueren heeft zijn carrière met hart en ziel gewijd aan het begeleiden van zangers. Hij werkt regelmatig samen met het Coco Collectief, een vocaal ensemble dat zich richt op kunstzang. Sinds oktober 2021 is hij de pianist van het vocaal ensemble Frommermann. Hij werkte samen met onder meer de violisten Frederieke Saeijs, Theo Olof, Herman Krebbers en leden van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. (...)

"The three-quarters Belgian Spiegel Quartet -- first violinist Elisa Kawaguti is Japanese while the rest are all Belgian -- is the ideal ensemble to realize the quartets of César Franck and Ernest Chausson. The reasons for this go beyond the fact that Franck was himself Belgian and that, as his pupil, Chausson drew sustenance from the same music as well. The more pertinent reason is that the Spiegel Quartet is sweet-toned but clear, passionately argued but lucid, and deeply felt but not sentimental -- all qualities both these late Romantic works need to succeed." Julius Engelbert Röntgen (Leipzig, 9 mei 1855 – Utrecht, 13 september 1932) was een Nederlands-Duitse componist, pianist en dirigent. Van Johannes Brahms ondervond hij de meeste invloed op zijn componeren, maar ook liet hij zich beïnvloeden door César Franck en Max Reger. Röntgen had liefde voor oude volksmuziek – iets wat hij deelde met zijn vriend Edvard Grieg – en schreef bewerkingen van oud-Nederlandse dansen en liederen. Meer dan 600 werken liet hij na, waarvan een aantal destijds is uitgegeven door Breitkopf & Härtel. His six violin sonatas fuse lyricism with conversational ease and chromatic harmonies with folk-derived melodies. This second volume of the complete set (Volume 1 is on 8.574213) charts a decade’s worth of composition, from 1905 to 1915. No. 4 in E major is hymn-like, while No. 5 in A major is playful and deeply lyrical. His final violin sonata No. 6 in G minor, is sombre with a nervous energy reflective of the time of its composition, though still, as always, exuding Brahmsian richness and beauty." (naxos.com)
"Röntgen was een zoon van de Nederlandse violist Engelbert Röntgen, concertmeester van het Leipziger Gewandhausorchester, en de Duitse pianiste Pauline Klengel. Van Louis Plaidy en Carl Reinecke (dirigent in het Gewandhaus) kreeg hij pianolessen. Op jonge leeftijd schreef hij al enkele composities en in 1871 werden de eerste gedrukt. Als muzikaal wonderkind ging hij langs de grote Duitse muzieksteden als Düsseldorf, Hamburg en zijn geboortestad Leipzig. Op zijn 14e werd Röntgen voorgesteld aan Franz Liszt, voor wie hij een van zijn eigen composities ten gehore bracht. Liszt nodigde hem daarop uit voor een van zijn beroemde soirees in zijn huis in Weimar. Na zijn opleiding aan het conservatorium van Leipzig toog hij naar de pianist Franz Lachner in München om daar zijn techniek nog verder te verbeteren. (...)
