"The first track and EP title, Besame Mucho, translates to “Kiss me a lot” and is an old classic Mexican bolero (think Spanish ballroom music). Followed by “Sola Soy,” or “I am alone” is an original song by Vasquez. Track three, Lo que pasó, pasó, translates to “What’s Past, Is Past”. Next, Te he visto pasar, or “I’ve Seen You Passing By” is the third original piece. And finally, another old classic Quizás, quizás, quizás rounds out the selection. In short, the album is greater than the sum of its parts. Vasquez’s delivery is vibrant, fearless, and soulful, in league with titans like Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. Besame Mucho is as much a delight on the 100th listen as it is on the second and third. But while she gleefully gallops through rancheras and mariachis, the Cantina she hangs out in delivers more than the usual margarita-laced clichés. Incarnating La Llorona, Mexico's mythical weeping woman, she plunders her country's native musical heritage, telling stories, confessing her sins, but it's alla role, a ruse almost, and she delights in the melodrama. Tribute-CD door diverse uitvoerenden van 18 nummers van de populaire Mexicaanse componist en zanger: Agustin Lara. Hij werd geboren in de staat Veracruz, maar kort na zijn geboorte verhuisde zijn familie naar Coyoacán. Zijn eerste compositie schreef hij in 1927 voor zijn geliefde. Vanaf 1929 werkte hij voor de tenor Juan Arvizu als componist en een jaar later begon zijn carrière bij de radio. Vanaf de jaren 30 begon Lara muziek te schrijven voor films en maakte hij tournees door Latijns-Amerika. Hoewel hij vele bekende nummers schreef werd van hem gezegd dat hij nooit muzieknoten heeft leren lezen. Lara had romances met meerdere vrouwen waaronder María Félix, die zijn eerste echtgenote werd. Vanaf de jaren 40 werd Lara populair in Spanje en op uitnodiging van de Spaanse dictator Francisco Franco betrok hij een huis in Madrid. Vanaf 1968 ging zijn gezondheid snel achteruit. Hij overleed in 1970 en werd begraven in het Panteón de Dolores in Mexico-Stad. (Wikipedia)
"Nimmer hoorden wij en zó overtuigende Spaanstalige singer/songwriter dan de Colombiaanse Marta Gómez. Haar prachtig heldere open stem zet ze zo gedoseerd in dat achter ieder woord dat ze zingt zo'n diepgang schuilgaat dat het eigenlijk niet uitmaakt als je haar niet verstaat. Het gevoel erachter wordt namelijk onmiddelijk duidelijk op een manier die zich alleen laat vergelijken met zangeressen van het kaliber Joni Mitchell en Elis Regina. Mocht Gómez alleen met gitaarbegeleiding folky liedjes zingen, dan zou het feitelijk al genoeg zijn, maar als geen ander verwerkt ze ook nog de ritmes van Latijns-Amerika in haar nummers. Daardoor groeit het prachtig akoestisch geproduceerde "Musiquita" uit tot een van de allermooiste Latijnsamerikaanse CD's van 2009. Waar menig zangeres met zo'n heldere open stem al gauw te zoet en voorspelbaar klinkt, houdt Marta Gómez alle mooizingerij buiten de deur door alleen te zingen wat recht uit haar hart komt.
