"For those of you unfamiliar, she is often referred to as the greatest Brazilian singer of all time. I think she just has an amazingly evocative and powerful singing style. Sadly she died in 1982 at the age of just 36 from a cocktail of drugs and alcohol - more than 100,000 people followed the funeral procession in Sao Paulo. She left behind a lengthy discography as she first started recording at age just 16. My favourite songs on this album are Vento De Maio with Lo Borges, (track 11) & (track 13) O Que Foi Feito Devera, with Milton Nasciemento." (The Audio Standard)
"She is innocent and wise, a nomad and a poet, an alchemist of styles whose music is more colorful than the sum of its parts. On Sonho Real (Dream Come True), her third album, she mixes elements of forró, ska, reggae and dub, spins stream-of-consciousness images into stories and plows the untranslatable Portuguese saudade (melancholy, yearning, suspended between happy and sad) into good vibrations. Her voice turns womanly/mature as she describes the people and props of Na Favela (In the Slum)—including a fortune-teller, unpaid debts and a husband who spends too much time drinking with his buddies. The irrepressible Flavia Coelho became the world traveling musician she dreamed of; she not only looked at life and refused to take “no” for an answer, she also generously shares her formula."
