"Though hardly underrepresented in terms of greatest hits releases (well into double figures), this three-disc collection immediately trumps and supersedes all before it with a coherence and scope that’s positively delightful. Cherry-picked by Anderson himself and eschewing any strict chronology, there’s a flow that befits a man who knows his way around lengthy arrangements. Wheat-heavy, chaff-light, the seeds are precisely scattered and cohere like a dream. Space precludes too many examples, but pairing North Sea Oil with Steel Monkey, Weathercock with Cross-Eyed Mary, and the triple whammy of Bourrée, Dun Ringill and Heavy Horses is both bold and effective. Ending the collection with Locomotive Breath exemplifies Anderson’s approach to its assembly (and presumably his feelings on the track itself), and proves a fitting coda to a substantial and considered collection. "Botanical Gardens trapt behoorlijk stevig af met de titelsong, een countryrocker met puntig snarenwerk. The Lucky Guy hinkt onbezorgd verder op twangend snarenwerk. De Waving Man en de Grief and Hope zijn lekker ouderwetse folkie stompers die op het podium ongetwijfeld in uitbundige sing- alongs resulteren. Voor de echte fijnproevers is het even wachten tot When July Comes, zo’n typische naar het verleden refererende, met mooie strijkers gelardeerde, pianoballade. Het tedere, emotioneel geladen You’re All I ever Had snijdt nog wat dieper, opmerkelijk is dat er in het weemoedige stemtimbre nagenoeg geen sleet zit. Hoe kan een ondertussen 72-jarige zanger dat beter illustreren dan met Last Night When We We’re Young, een prachtige in een ver verleden al door Sinatra vereeuwigde, ballade voor de ‘wee wee hours’."
