"The emotional intimacy of her songs has always been one of the most moving aspects of her music, and these bare-bones recordings are beautiful and striking. The purity of her instrument on "Write My Ticket," "Stray Paper," and "Plainest Thing" allows her to give her Joni Mitchell influences a moment in the spotlight, and what she learned from Mitchell serves her very well. The LP's other five tracks are previously unreleased: "Broad Daylight" and "Avalon Pier" are only slightly sparer than the Kitchen Recordings but similarly effective, "4th Street Windowsill" is a live recording of Merritt and her horn-enhanced band sounding powerfully soulful in the Southern style, the title track is a loose take where she is accompanied by piano and drums, and "Last Day I Knew What to Do" closes the set with a charging rocker (recorded during the Tambourine sessions) that proves she can belt it out strong when she wants to. The previously unheard songs are certainly up to Merritt's usual standards of quality." (AllMusic)
"James McMurtry schrijft over de gewone Amerikaan. Het album "Childish Things" uit 2005, wordt weleens weggezet als populistisch, tot verdriet van de maker. Maar op "The Black Dog And The Wandering Boy" klinkt zijn country nog even politiek en maatschappelijk betrokken. In gonzende rootsliedjes als "The Color Of Night" en bijvoorbeeld het titellied horen we de echo’s van grote landgenoten als Springsteen en Dylan. In "Annie" blikt McMurtry nog maar eens terug op het grote Amerikaanse trauma van 11 september 2001, en plengt een rauwe viool hete tranen. Met zijn knauwende stem en basale slaggitaar laat hij zijn afkeer van de toenmalige president blijken, ruim twintig jaar na dato. 'Now they tell us how he found his feet/Standing in the rubble of the towers.' McMurtry stelt de zaken niet mooier voor dan ze zijn, en zijn verhalende teksten zijn vaak van een verbluffende eenvoud. In "Sailing Away" is het alsof de singer-songwriter ter plekke een verhaal vertelt in een kroeg op een barkruk naast je." (Volkskrant)
