"You’re a member of a punk band (Hunx and His Punx) with a cult following. You’re also a hairdresser. You want to make your first album under your own name – Seth Bogart – shedding the Hunx persona. So what do you do? You make a weird-ass pop album full of attention-grabbing music and provocative lyrics. Mostly, it works. Somehow. It’s difficult to describe just what you’ll find on "Seth Bogart". There is an ode to cuckoldry, a club jam full of flagrantly false braggadocio, and the single about a woman’s addiction to eating makeup. It’s no coincidence that Bogart is using Pee Wee Herman’s aesthetic to bring this album to life in art installations. “Eating Makeup” has vocals that are sung in falsetto and slightly off-key; it sounds like that something that could be played in the Mos Eisley Cantina. I can’t say that I love the song, but it’s so different than anything I’ve heard recently that I appreciate it immensely. There are many more WTF (has Marc Maron trademarked this yet?) moments on the eponymous album. I haven’t listened to anything like this in a while. However, he can write songs with the best of them. He doesn’t need all of the distraction and camp that fills the rest of the album, but it sure makes it fun. Bogart lets it all hang out there but still manages to make highly engaging and listenable music. That’s a tall order. This is a potentially influential album in its risk-taking and broaching topics that don’t typically get mentioned in popular music." (The Fire Note, 4 uit 5 sterren)
"Right away the album starts out soothing and peaceful, their buzzy drone anchoring the various flutes, keyboards, guitars, lilting vocals, and uplifting orchestral strings towards a bright and cleansing crescendo. You could be forgiven at first for thinking Okkervil River is just another reverb-soaked dream-folk act, but once you give their tunes a second spin, you start to notice all the lush background sound; it’s much more enveloping and patient, loping along at its own pace, never hurried. As I listen now, I’m filled with a desire to go to a river. Very sunny, with an almost classical feel with the strings and flutes. As I keep listening, it becomes clear this is multi-situational music, and that is hard to find these days: something equally appropriate for sitting solo on the porch, fishing, jamming with friends, at a backyard hangout, or on the stage. It gets all splashy and ‘60s-style while still being very much in the now and in touch with the way folk music is moving. Not that this is just folk, I think that’s pretty clear by this point, but that’s certainly an element. It’s like progressive folk with world music elements drenched in a soft glow.Weather can have a powerful effect on music and vice versa, and I am continually struck by the emotive nature of this record (the bird chirps, ocean waves, and sounds of wind in the trees don’t hurt either). Little electronic blips show up occasionally to tremendous effect, rippling through the acoustics and percussion ever so delicately, almost improvsationally. After listening to "Away", I feel as though I need to listen to everything they’ve ever done." (9 out of 10, The pop break)
Tegenstellingen in muziek, in tekst, soms zelfs in één zin.
(OOR)
