Simeon ten Holt, de in 1923 geboren Nederlandse componist, schrijft geen muziek meer maar mémoires. Intussen genieten vooral zijn stukken voor 4 pianos een buitengewone populariteit. Van welke andere hedendaagse componist worden hier zoveel CDs verkocht en concerten gegeven? En dat ondanks de grote (variabele) lengte van de stukken. Van Ten Holts betoverende, minimal-achtige muziek voor pianos is Canto Ostinato veruit het bekendst geworden. Niet minder interessant zijn de andere op deze 11 CDs opgenomen stukken: Leminscaat, Horizon, Incantatie, Meandres en Shadow nor Prey. Goed voor vele uren luisteren naar deze plezierig organische muziek en ronkende pianoklanken. Een geheel Nederlandse product, opgenomen door Ten Holt-specialisten Irene Russo, Fred Oldenburg, en het Sandra en Jeroen van Veen Piano ensemble achter de vleugels.
"The piece that Days and Nights in Rocinha resembles most closely, in structure if not in mood, is Ravel's Boléro, frequently described as a precursor to minimalism. Glass takes a memorable, expansive melody with a Latin rhythmic vitality and flavor and spins it out over 23 minutes. Glass veteran Dennis Russell Davies leads the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in a radiant performance. Persephone, based on the Greek myth, was written for a production by Robert Wilson. Scored for orchestra and an almost omnipresent chorus, the piece has the variety and involved development to give it an impact opposite that of Days and Nights and Rochinha. Its sound is more typically Glassian, closely related to harmonic and figural language of La belle et la bête. Relâche Ensemble, directed by Joseph Franklin, plays and sings with beautifully focused tone and attention to the score's nuances. Frank Scheffers reputatie op het gebied van documentaires over en met opmerkelijke namen uit de klassieke wereld is even groot als die van Bruno Monsaignon. Scheffer richt zich daarbij op hedendaags klassiek. "Music For Airports" wijkt wat af en betreft de beelden die Scheffer maakte voor de uitvoering van Brian Eno's baanbrekende ambientcompositie door Bang On A Can All Stars op het Holland Festival 1999. Het stuk was daartoe gearrangeerd voor akoestisch instrumentarium door de componisten achter Bang On A Can: Michael Gordon, David Lang, Julia Wolfe en All Stars-lid Evan Ziporyn. Bij dit werk, dat anno 2017 perfect aansluit op de neoklassieke muziek van lieden als Max Richter, Joep Beving en Nils Frahm, schoot Scheffer schimmige out-of-focus-beelden van reizigersstromen op Schiphol. In The Ocean is een documentaire over de generatie post-seriële componisten die de tonaliteit 'herontdekten' en aansluiting vonden bij 'pop'-muzikanten als Zappa en Eno. Verbindende schakel in deze docu is weer Bang On A Can.
"De klassiek geschoolde saxofonist Tom Sanderman heeft voor zijn debuut-CD hoog ingezet. Niet alleen selecteerde hij drie vroege werken van Terry Riley, Steve Reich en Philip Glass voor sopraansax, hij vroeg ook nog eens componist Anthony Fiumara om een nieuw stuk voor tenorsax dat hier is vastgelegd. Sanderman kiest dus voor een programma van componisten uit de zogenaamde minimal music, want ook Fiumara voelt zich tot deze stijl aangetrokken. Fiumara is als componist beslist beïnvloed door de drie genoemde grondleggers en in zijn stuk voor Sanderman The River Beneath Us horen we dat duidelijk terug. Iedere vorm van pathetiek of dramatiek mijdend, kiest de componist voor vliedende klanken, soms lyrisch, maar altijd ingetogen en poëtisch, met een soort van ouderwetse zuiverheid. Het is Sanderman op het lijf geschreven en vooral het derde deel, Inward and Gentle speelt hij met grote ingetogen kracht. Een prachtig debuut, waar werkelijk helemaal niets op aan te merken is." "After several graph compositions and early pattern pieces with jazz ensembles in the late '50s and early '60s ("Concert for Two Pianists and Tape Recorders" and "Ear Piece"), Riley invented a whole new music which has since gone under many names (minimal music -- a category often applied to sustained pieces as well -- pattern music, phase music, etc.) which is set forth in its purest form in the famous "In C" (1964). "Rainbow in Curved Air" demonstrates the straightforward pattern technique but also has Riley improvising with the patterns, making gorgeous timbre changes on the synthesizers and organs, and presenting contrasting sections that has become the basic structuring of his works ("Candenza on the Night Plain" and other pieces). Scored for large orchestra with extra percussion and electronics, some of this work's seven movements are: "Star Night," "Blue Lotus," "The Earth Below," and "Island of the Rhumba King."" "The Belly of An Architect" is a 1987 British-Italian film directed by Peter Greenaway. Its soundtrack is a result of the collaboration between Wim Mertens and Glenn Branca. The film tells us the story of American architect Stourley Kracklite whos visiting Rome for an exhibition of 18th century architect Etienne-Louis Boullée. Hes suffering from a severe belly ache, as a result giving his pregnant wife (two bellies) not enough attention which prompts her to make advances to another man. Greenaway is known for his cynical comedies with a minimal plot, augmented by lush and surreal photography. The Mertens soundtrack fits the story and visuals like a glove with its minimal, neo classical repetitive themes. Greenaway also frequently worked together with acclaimed minimalist Michael Nyman. With "Solo Piano", Glass presents himself 'unplugged' - no electronic keyboards or synthesizers, and no overdubs, either - just solo piano. Metamorphosis was written in 1988 and takes its name from a play based on Kafkas short story. Its second track, Metamorphosis Two, formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film The Hours.
