?This was truly the album where Chandra broke away from the pop structures underlying much of Monsoon's work. As Chandra began to write much of her material , the dance rhythms of her debut were virtually eliminated, although the emphasis on Indian instrumentation remained intact. The music simultaneously incorporated elements that were both more traditional and more free-form than her previous work -- traditional in the sense that she drew upon Indian vocal styles such as spoken bols; free-form in that there were no lyrics, just wordless vocalizations, often overdubbed numerous times. Divided into ten tracks with a single title the suite-like piece remained cognizant of modern technology and outside musical influences, without being overwhelmed by them. A straight collaboration originally undertaken in 1994 between main man Chris Rael of postmodern psychedelic-Indian fusioneers Church of Betty and Anglo-Indian siren Najma Akhtar, Forbidden Kisses took over a year to complete, finally seeing release in 1996. Part of the reason for the lengthy time consumption is the complexity of the album, which is a tribute to pioneer Hindi cinema composer S.D. Burman, whose reputation, the liner notes point out, is roughly equivalent in South Asia to George Gershwin or Irving Berlin in the West. You really a get a feel for the Western cinematic influence on his music on "Piya Tu Ab to Aaja," and Rael wonderfully frames this aspect of the composition. His additions to the music are awesome, spotting everything from exotic hand percussion and sitar to typical Western instruments (guitar, violin, keyboards) and splashes of horns at all the right moments, neither overloading nor underwhelming the music but rendering it mutable and wonderfully alive. Daarom nu ook deel 2 van deze 'guide'. Opnieuw 3 CD's, die thematisch ieder een eigen deelgebied bestrijken. Het meest kitscherig zou CD3 moeten zijn, want die heet 'Bollywood Kitsch'. De liedjes op deze CD stammen uit de jaren 1947-1977. De geluidskwaliteit van de oudste opnamen laat te wensen over, maar de kirrende zangstemmen, pregnante orgeltjes en soms ratelende percussie blijft aanwezig genoeg. CD2 bevat opnamen uit de jaren 60 en laat horen dat Amerikaanse rock 'n' roll-klanken zich laten integreren in de Bollywood-sound. Later gebeurde dat ook met de disco, zoals in de opnamen uit de jaren 80 op CD1 is te horen, met o.a. een Bollywood-medley van "I Feel Love" en "Que Sera, Mi Vida", nu getiteld "Rambha Ho Ho Ho". Vaak terugkerend fenomeen op alle drie de CD's: de kwinkelerende kindstem van Asha Bhosle, dé ster van dit genre.
De legendarische Indiase zangeres Asha Bhosle verzorgt de vocalen op dit album van het populaire strijkensemble Kronos Quartet. De CD is opgedragen aan Bollywood-componist R.D. Burman. Burman, de echtgenoot van Asha Bhosle, stierf in 1994 en heeft gedurende twee decennia meer dan 300 hits voortgebracht. Bhosle heeft het grootste deel van zijn liederen gezongen. Asha Bhosle (van 1933, maar nog steeds met jeugdige, kwinkelerende stem) en is net als haar zus Lata Mangeshkar bijzonder populair bij Bollywood-fans. Zij begon als elfjarige met haar zangcarrière en maakt al meer dan 50 jaar deel uit van de Indiase film- en muziekindustrie. Bhosle heeft aan meer dan 1.000 Bollywood-films meegewerkt en 13.000 nummers gezongen. Op deze CD zijn bekende Asha Bhosle-nummers als Dum Maro Dum, Mehbooba Mehbooba en Chura Liya Hai Tum Ne te horen, ondersteund door strijkkwartet, vaak aangevuld met extra instrumentarium. Zo geven synthesizers hier en daar die typische in westerse oren wat kitscherige Bollywood-sound.
Als er één zangeres die in één adem wordt genoemd met Bollywood, dan is het Asha Bhosle wel. Asha was de middelste van zes kinderen in een bovengemiddeld muzikaal gezin. Al vanaf haar tiende acteerde en zong Asha. Aanvankelijk kwam het succes moeizaam, de zangeres nam elke klus aan, maar door haar veelzijdigheid groeide haar reputatie. Vanaf 1966 werkte ze samen met de veelzijdige componist / producer Rahul Dev Burman met wie ze later ook zou trouwen. Volgens verschillende bronnen is Bhosle de artiest die de meeste liedjes opnam. De schattingen lopen uiteen van 12.000 tot een duizelingwekkende 20.000 liedjes. (Muziekweb)

"Here, Mohammed Rafi dips and croons his way through a number of classic performances from the films that his voice graced. The album opens with a number taking freely from the blaxploitation aesthetic, before moving into an early duet with Lata Mangeshkar, prior to their temporary falling-out. A simple happy song passes quickly, followed by a somewhat sparser work (sparse being a relative term in Bollywood orchestration) featuring Rafi's vocals more centrally, and a pair of duets with Asha Bhosle (Lata's sister). Another duet with Lata, post-falling-out, continues the stretch of multiple voices, and a couple of solo pieces showcase the essence of Rafi's vocal delivery exquisitely. This compilation makes an excellent item for those with a basic appreciation of the genre, showcasing one of its finest singers in his best light, as well as in combination with other luminaries of the playback scene."
