The Night The Zombies Came (2024)

"Zanger/gitarist/componist Frank Black duikt winkelcentra, moerassen en restaurants in en flirt met druïden. Metaforen, diepgang of gewoon heerlijke flauwekul? (OOR)

At The BBC [re-released 2CD edition] (2024)

"Anyone who was converted by Pixies back in the late 80’s will know how important this band were pre-grunge to the likes of little known band at the time Nirvana. Kurt Cobain himself once said he was guilty of plundering some of the sound from their early classics "Surfa Rosa" and "Come On Pilgrim" which worked to his advantages as well as Pixies themselves. The yelps and guttural howls and screams from Black Francis were a pleasure to hear on abrasive tracks "Broken Face", "Tony’s Theme" and "Something Against You". Let’s not forget the infamous "Where Is My Mind" which is the perfect soundtrack to a hardcore pop punk band and featured in Fight Club for the closing scenes and was even covered by James Blunt. "Come On Pilgrim" also had its 100 mile an hour tracks including "Isla De Encanta", "Vamos" and the brilliant "Nimrods Son", yet the pop songs were all shining out with the likes of Holiday Song and the wonderful Caribou which lurched between ballad and balls out screaming alt rock." Hollywood Holidays : The Classic 1991 Radio Broadcast (2013)

"Hollywood Holidays is a live in concert recording of The Pixies. It was recorded for a KCRW-FM radio broadcast in 1991 and catches the band promoting the Trompe Le Monde studio album. It was recorded at The Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on 22nd December 1991 with the exception of tracks 19 to 21 which came from the concert held on the previous day. We’re very short of live recordings from the Pixies when they were such a creative force in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As you can see, their fourth album Trompe le Monde dominates this set list. It’s unfortunate that this is also their weakest album. From my perspective, this falls into the interesting but not essential category. My first choice Pixies live recording remains Live at Vredenburg from 1990." (bestlivealbums.com)

Acoustic (Live In Newport)
Blu-ray

Acoustic (Live In Newport) (2006)

"This Blu-ray repackages two previously released DVDs recorded after the reformation. "Acoustic: Live in Newport" (79 min) is from the 2005 Newport Folk Festival. This sunny afternoon on a Rhode Island beach was the band's first official acoustic set. They played selections from their entire catalog, although only one, "Subbacultcha", comes off their final album, "Trompe le Monde". Hearing these songs played with different arrangements is a treat and reveals how good the music is when stripped down. The band seems slightly nervous about the undertaking, but they do a very fine job. Of the 22 songs 7 aren't repeated in the Electric show. The "Electric" portion comes from "Club Date: Live at the Paradise in Boston" (92 min). This hometown show was performed a few days after the Newport gig to 200 lucky fans. This is a much better representation of the Pixies. They cover more material and 14 of the 29 songs weren't played during the acoustic show."
