"A coupling of two more than acceptable performances from the Opéra de Lyon under Kent Nagano. Not that Arlecchino can ever be pinned down: its 'meaning' could produce endless exercise for the disciples of 'concept opera'. Most of us will find occupation enough in the score, which is a proportionately intriguing mixture of brisk busy-ness, lyricism, allusion and parody. By comparison with Puccini's Torandot, Busoni's is a chaste score, animated much - more by the energy of comedy than by the designs of grand-theatre. At rare moments the spirits of the two conjoin, but Busoni has no Liu (not a figure for comedy) and he has, of course, no "Nessun dorma". Yet he is not short of tunes (one of them, astonishingly enough, is Greensleeves), and melodic inventiveness is in fact one of the score's delights. The Turandot, Mechtild Gessendorf, has a clear bright voice and an authoritative manner; the Kalaf, Stefan Dahlberg, is a very adequate tenor. A most delightful and enterprising set." (Gramophone)
Historische opnamen uit 1956 (sonate) en 1954 (concert) van de beroemde violist Joseph Szigeti. Weliswaar mono, maar verder van prima geluidskwaliteit (de ouderdom van de opnamen in ogenschouw genomen).
