"Allgood schrijft haar eigen tekst en muziek. Ze is namelijk een singer-songwriter, maar dan zonder kampeerakkoorden. Welnee, ze maakt pittige arrangementen. Dat wordt lezen geblazen; al snel vier kantjes per stuk. Zelfs een enkel bekend nummer als "Both Sides Now" (van Joni Mitchell) voorziet ze van grillige accenten die op het eerste gehoor geheel los staan van de vertrouwde melodie. Haar eigen songs maken springerige intervallen. Ze ‘scat’ graag en pakt dan af en toe een harmonisch gezien merkwaardig nootje uit het hoge register. Ze heeft een schijnbaar-moeiteloze meisjesstem, maar weet alle noten trefzeker te raken. Soms maken de arrangementen gebruik van het héle kwartet; Allgood is dan niet een zangeres-met-begeleiding. Ze zoekt echter ook naar andere combinaties, zoals in een ‘special chorus’ voor bas en zang. Je hoort dat hier een grondig geschoolde artiest aan het werk is. Hij deinst ook niet terug voor het vertolken van haar beroemdste liedjes: "God Bless The Child" en "Strange Fruit". Zonder clichés benadert hij deze stukgezongen liedjes en geeft ze daarmee nieuwe glans. Belangrijk is ook de rol van pianist Jason Moran: een uitstekende keuze. Zijn spel is sober, wat samen met de rust die James' stem ademt, een mooi spanningsveld oplevert. Knap hoe José James zich steeds beheerst. Hij heeft wel eens krachtiger gezongen, maar als je goed luistert, hoor je veel nuances. Alles klinkt fluisterzacht en toch zeer intens. Zoals Billie Holiday zelf, alleen dan anders." "Because many of Dave Grusin's albums have been rather commercial and overproduced, it is often forgotten how excellent a pianist he could be. This CD features an enjoyable program of George and Ira Gershwin tunes played by a continually changing all-star lineup that includes the leader's piano, clarinetist Eddie Daniels, vibraphonist Gary Burton, altoist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter Sal Marquez, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Dave Weckl and guest spots for pianist Chick Corea (who duets with Grusin on "'S Wonderful") and Don Grusin. A few of the numbers are given light funk rhythms and made to sound slightly "contemporary" (particularly "I've Got Plenty O' Nuthin'," which has an electric Ramsey Lewis-type groove), but overall, this is a very tasteful and respectful set." "John Patitucci, a brilliant bassist best known for his fusion playing with Chick Corea's Elektric Band, leans strongly in the direction of Brazilian pop music on this CD. Most of the selections have vocals, and although Patitucci takes a lot of excellent acoustic bass solos (and there are occasional solo spots for keyboardist John Beasley and saxophonist Steve Tavaglione), this CD is more in the world music than fusion vein. The vocalists include Joao Bosco, Dori Caymmi, Kleber Jorge, Ivan Lins, Cathy Brandolino and Kevyn Lettau." (Allmusic).

Allyson also receives exemplary support from what some might consider an all-star band, featuring bassist John Patitucci; saxophonists Bob Berg, Steve Wilson, and James Carter; pianist/educator James Williams; and drummer Lewis Nash. All told, the musicians inject their distinct musical personas into these moving portraitures amid Allyson's trance-like renderings of pieces such as "You Don't Know What Love Is," "All or Nothing at All," and others." In oktober 2010 overleed geheel onverwacht, in zijn slaap, toetsenist T. Lavitz, vooral bekend geworden via Dixie Dregs. Op dit album, een van z'n laatste grote projecten, speelt hij met enkele Dixie Dregs-maten (o.a. Steve Morse) en jazzrockkanonnen als gitarist Frank Gambale en drummer Dave Weckl muziek die de ene keer refereert aan Dixie Dregs (jazzrock met onbestemde country & western-feel), de andere keer dieper de jazz duikt. Weckl zorgt voor een stevige rockdrive, maar opvallend genoeg is alle muziek geheel akoestisch. En dat van mannen die we vooral kennen van elektrisch werk. School of the Arts is different from every album I've ever done as a leader," says Lavitz. It's utterly infectious jazz-fusion with aspirations toward chamber or classical music, with rock's reckless abandon simmering just under the surface. Despite the obvious -and some might say inevitable- chops heard on this record, the high level of musicianship never detracts from the overall flow of the compositions." (AllAboutJazz)
"For his recording debut, Ivo Perelman performs seven folk melodies, five of which are traditional Brazilian children's songs. A powerful tenor player whose style and sound at times recalls Albert Ayler, Gato Barbieri, and Clifford Jordan, Perelman uses the simple melodies as points of departure and places to land after his intense and fairly free but melodic improvisations. The first three songs co-feature vocalist Flora Purim, who is at the top of her game. Two of the other pieces have Perelman dueting with pianist Eliane Elias. The two bassists, John Patitucci and Buell Neidlinger, work together quite well. Don Preston takes a wild synthesizer solo on "O Cravo e a Rosa," and both drummer Peter Erskine and percussionist Airto are colorful in support. But the main star throughout the CD is Ivo Perelman, whose distinctive sound, relative ease in the falsetto register, and creative spirit were already quite impressive at this early point in his career." Mikes efforts to get his final message out to all of us which is really what it is, a message will go down as one of the great codas in modern music history. What happened in the studio during those few days in August is impossible to describe.
