In het openings- en slot-deel is haast een bigband te horen, daartussendoor meandert het dubbelalbum alle kanten op van naar Concerto de Aranguez neigende third stream jazz naar soul (een vocale versie van het thema) naar fusion en terug. "Thanks to the Latin-inflected title track, "Children Of Sanchez" became another huge hit for Chuck Mangione. The title song even earned him a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, and serious jazz listeners will spot a problem with that award -- it was for pop, not jazz. That, of course, is an accurate assessment of Mangione's music, since there isn't much improvisation on the album at all. Instead, there's a selection of Spanish and Latin-flavored instrumentals, arranged as if to give the impression that the album is a song cycle. Nevertheless, there's enough pleasant music here to satisfy fans of his pop stylings." (Allmusic)
Throughout the 1970s, flügelhorn player Chuck Mangione was a celebrity. His purposely lightweight music was melodic pop that was upbeat, optimistic, and sometimes uplifting. Mangione's records were big sellers yet few of his fans from the era knew that his original goal was to be a bebopper. In the '70s generally used large orchestras and vocalists (including Esther Satterfield), putting the emphasis on lightweight melodies such as "Hill Where the Lord Hides," "Land of Make Believe," "Chase the Clouds Away" and the huge 1977 hit (featuring guitarist Grant Geissman) "Feels So Good." This compilation collects many of the famed flügelhorn player's crossover jazz hits (including all mentioned). Also included is his theme for the 1979 film "Children of Sanchez"." Bugelist Mangione is bekend om zijn toegankelijke 'light'-jazz, dat onder meer de hit "Feel So Good" opleverde in 1978. Dat vertolkt hij hier ook, maar in een bijzondere versie: zijn toenmalige muzikale steun en toeverlaat Rob Mathes (gitaar, toetsen, zang) heeft er namelijk een vocale versie van gemaakt. Mathes valt sowieso op, met zijn soulvolle zang, ergens halverwege Jack Bruce en Alex Ligertwood. Maar let ook op de percussionist: dat is namelijk een piepjonge Billy Martin, die later successen behaalde met Medeski, Martin & Wood. Diverse stukken komen van jaren '80-albums die, op instignatie van Columbia, veel te 'slick' waren geproduceerd, maar die in deze live-vorm veel beter tot z'n recht komen. En Mangione (wiens naam op de hoes consequent als Mangoine is gespeld) blijft een fantastische bugelist, die een schitterende toon haalt uit dit instrument dat toch altijd een beetje een weemoedig gevoel oproept. Helaas staat "Children Of Sanchez" (het thema van NCRV Zaterdag Sport) niet op de setlist.
Heruitgave van het album "Recuerdo" uit 1962 met twee alternatieve versies van "Solar" en "The Little Prince" als bonus tracks. "Joined by an all-star rhythm section (pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes) plus Joe Romano on tenor, flute, and alto, Mangione mostly sticks to bebop on four jazz standards (including Charlie Parker's "Big Foot") and three of his originals.
