"Alle kwaliteiten die Cassandra Wilson haar welverdiende status hebben bezorgd, zouden haar in principe ongeschikt moeten maken om tot een geslaagde Billie Holiday-tribute te komen. Onderkoeld, elegant, afstandelijk, geraffineerd - dat zijn niet de eigenschappen die je associeert met Lady Day. Maar dit is een fantastisch album geworden. Dat is bepaald niet in de laatste plaats te danken aan de Britse producer Nick Launay, die ook Nick Cave, Virgin Prunes, The Posies en Killing Joke op zijn CV heeft staan. Net zoals Europese cineasten soms onvermoede dimensies weten mee te geven aan typisch Amerikaanse filmgenres (Wenders, Leone), zo kruist Launay hier het oeuvre van Holiday met doodshoofd-Americana à la Cave en laat daarbij Wilsons bronzen frasering tot in alle schaars verlichte hoeken en gaten van de arrangementen kruipen. This collection of previously released tracks features Wilson on various jazz standards giving one a nice view of Wilson as simply a jazz vocalist. Winter & Winter-rerelease van haar zesde album, in 1992 verschenen op het JMT-label. Ze maakte toen nog niet die sferische rootsy muziek die ze later voor Blue Note ging maken, maar expressieve jazz met avantgardistische trekjes, waarin ze haar stem op een aan Betty Carter verwante manier als instrument inzet.
