"An excellent collaboration of the Nancy Wilson voice with the Cannonball Adderley alto sax from the early '60s. While this 1961 recording was the first time Wilson was with Adderley in the studio, it was not the first time they had worked together. After singing with Rusty Bryant's band, Wilson had worked with Adderley in Columbus, OH. (It was there that Adderley encouraged her to go to N.Y.C. to do some recording, eventually leading to this session.) Not entirely a vocal album, five of the 12 cuts are instrumentals. A highlight of the album is the gentle cornet playing of Nat Adderley behind Wilson, especially on "Save Your Love for Me" and on "The Old Country." Cannonball Adderley's swinging, boppish sax is heard to excellent effect throughout. Joe Zawinul's work behind Wilson on "The Masquerade Is Over" demonstrates that he is a talented, sensitive accompanist. Deze 11de CD in de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw presenteert 2 optredens van altsaxofonist Julian Cannonball Adderley in kwintetbezetting. De eerste is van 19 november 1960 in het Concertgebouw. De band bestond toen verder uit Nat Adderley (kornet), Victor Feldman (piano), Sam Jones (bas) en Louis Hayes (drums). Cannonball had juist zijn eerste grote hit met "This Here", dat natuurlijk werd uitgevoerd. Tijdens dit Jazz At The Philharmonic-concert speelden 3 groepen; de set bleef beperkt tot vier stukken. Deze werden door organisator Lou van Rees opgenomen. In juni 1966 kwam Adderley weer naar Nederland voor een TV-optreden met pianist Pim en bassist Ruud Jacobs, gitarist Wim Overgaauw en drummer Cees See. De 4 stukken (28 minuten) die zij voor de VPRO opnamen in Bellevue (waaronder Nat Adderleys "Work Song") vormen een passende aanvulling op de 40 minuten uit het Concertgebouw. De beelden werden waarschijnlijk gewist, de geluidsband bleef bewaard. Deze opnamen zijn nooit eerder uitgebracht. `The recording of Cannonball Takes Charge was sandwiched in between two events that would help earn Cannonball Adderley a permanent place in jazz lore. Just the day before the albums first session, he participated in the completion of Miles Daviss seminal Kind of Blue. Five months after Cannonball Takes Charge was finished, he had Riverside producer Orrin Keepnews record his newly formed quintet at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco which helped launch his career as one of the leading proponents of soul jazz. But what about the album made in between these two momentous occasions? Cannonball Takes Charge s concept was a common one: the altoist is the lone horn in a quartet performing a program made up primarily of standards. The results are anything but routine though, and show that 1959 was a very good year for Cannonball Adderley." (All About Jazz)

Deze 78 minuten lange compilatie bevat het meeste materiaal van de LP's "The Japanese Concerts" en "The Sextet", beide uit 1963. "Although the nine songs on this new Cannonball Adderley reissue were originally done live at concerts in Japan and San Francisco in 1963, they nevertheless make a nice tribute to departed jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie. The assembled group was among the finest Adderley ever led, with Yusef Lateef providing a dynamic, unpredictable third solo voice on flute, tenor sax, and oboe, contrasting with Cannonball's pungent alto sax and Nat Adderley's pithy cornet solos. Bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes were a top-flight tandem, while Joe Zawinul was then playing bluesy, funky piano in his pre-synthesizer, Miles Davis/Weather Report phase. "What's better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It's a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Adderley's playing on "Waltz for Debby" is both muscular and sensitive, as it is on the other Evans composition here, a modal ballad called "Know What I Mean?" Other treats include the sprightly "Toy" and two takes of the Gershwin classic "Who Cares?" The focus here is, of course, on Adderley's excellent post-bop stylings, but it's also interesting to hear Evans playing with a rhythm section as staid and conservative as Kay and Heath (both charter members of the Modern Jazz Quartet).
