Henryk Gorecki is een van de weinig hedendaagse componisten die in staat is om met schijnbare eenvoud en sonore klanken grootschalige werken toegangelijk te laten klinken. Net als zijn bekende Symphony of Sorrowful Songs is het Miserere niet alleen spiritueel maar ook politiek gekleurd. Een half uur durend meesterwerk voor groot a-capella koor als protest geschreven tegen de onderdrukking van de vakbondopstand tijdens de roerige Poolse politiek begin jaren tachtig. Zijn Miserere ofwel "heb erbarmen" is op te vatten als een intens pleidooi voor vrede. Zijn geestelijke composities, mede geinspireerd door Poolse volks melodien stromen over van krachtvolle vocale ontroering.
Nonesuch Records releases the late Henryk Góreckis final composition, Symphony No. 4, Tansman Episodes. The recording was made during the 2014 world premiere performance at Royal Festival Hall with co-commissioner London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrey Boreyko. The piece, which pays homage to Góreckis fellow Polish composer Alexsander Tansman, was incomplete at the time of Góreckis 2010 death and thus missed its previously scheduled premiere. However the score had precise indications for orchestration, which Góreckis son Mikolaj, also a composer, used to complete it. The Daily Telegraph said the piece caps Górecki's reputation as an orchestral composer, but it also contains some surprises. The music features some brutal juxtapositions of massively powerful music with slow, intimate passages for solo instruments, including prominent parts for piano and organ. (bron: Nonesuch)
Opname: 2005.\n"Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, this is the latest product of a relationship that also gave birth to the first two quartets. The background to No.3 is particularly intriguing; commissioned in 1992, it would be 13 years before it was finally delivered, in 2005. Incredibly, Gorecki had finished the work in 1995. Whatever the reason, it has been worth the wait. The works inspiration came from a poem by Velimir Khlebnikov: 'When horses die, they breathe/When grasses die, they wither/When suns die, they go out/When people die, they sing songs'. Whilst the slow, mournful music fully articulates the weight of death and grief, instead of being catapulted into corresponding misery, it has the surprising effect of throwing the listener into a state of contemplation, reverie and even hope. Fans of Gorecki will be familiar with the rocking motifs, and the juxtaposition of dissonance and consonance. Cinematografische visie.\n"Henryk Górecki schreef zijn Derde symfonie, de Symfonie der klaagzangen, in 1976. Toen 16 jaar later David Zinman het werk met London Sinfonietta en sopraan Dawn Upshaw opnam, werd het een ongekende wereldhit. Tony Palmer schoot kort na de release een film over Górecki en de thematiek die in deze symfonie voorkomt. De kern van de boodschap kan worden samengevat door de tekst afkomstig van de muur van een Gestapo-gevangenis die Górecki gebruikte voor het tweede deel: 'Niet huilen Moeder. O koningin van de hemel, Heilige Maria moeder van God, bescherm mij altijd'. De film, met beelden van het Silezië waar Górecki woonde, zijn gang door het vlakbij gelegen Auschwitz en de fragmenten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog terwijl Zinman en de zijnen spelen stuitten op weerstand. Maar nu blijkt dit een even teder als indringend beeld van de componist en zijn beweegredenen, een context die de symfonie een universele betekenis geeft.
