"In 2012, guitarist Pat Metheny won a Grammy for his album "Unity Band". It featured Chris Potter (ts, ss, bcl, fl), Ben Williams (b), and Antonio Sanchez (d). A year later, the Unity Group returned with "Kin ", which found the ensemble expanded with multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi. Arriving in 2016, "The Unity Sessions" showcases that expanded group live in a gorgeously produced performance at New York's Black Box Theatre. Here, we get cuts off both albums, as well as songs culled from Metheny's lengthy career. These run the gamut from acoustic pieces ("Adagia") to moody, groove-oriented modal fusion ("Roofdogs") to atmospheric world music-inflected pieces ("Come and See") and more. Elsewhere, the ensemble combines Coltrane-esque spirituality and African rhythms on "On Day One," and dives into the flamenco-steeped anthem "Rise Up." "In his illuminating book 'Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music', Derek Bailey explains the shift he made from guitarist of all trades to purely free improviser. To do so, he dumped traditional connections to devise a spiky, busy, atonal approach from the ground up. Forget melodies, chords, even tempo; in their stead, Bailey unleashes torrents of harmonics, microtones, clipped chords, chance dissonance, scurrying fretboard scrabbles, and a complete disregard for standard musicality. This triple-disc set documents late 1996 exploits of a symmetrical quartet: Bailey and Pat Metheny (guitars), Pat Wertico and Gregg Bendian (drums and percussion). Alternately a metallic roar and an acoustic sparkle, the music is spasmodically dangerous. I dont like the piercing distortion Metheny uses to cut through Baileys wall of noise, but his acoustic and guitar synth work is nice, and the drummers shake, rattle, and roll on a laundry list of objects. "Trumpeter Cuong Vu has a lengthy history with Metheny that goes back to "Speaking of Now" (2002). Since then, Vu has played with the guitarist at his more adventurous contemporary works. Despite having graduated from the New England Conservatory and worked with a.o. David Bowie, Myra Melford, and Laurie Anderson, Vu is a maverick. A highly gifted, forward-thinking musician, Vu often eschews the more clarion, declarative aspects of trumpet playing in favor of macabre growls, dampened tones, and madly skittering improvisatory lines. Pairing him with Metheny might seem like an odd choice. Metheny is known more for his warm tone and clean lines than downtown N.Y.C. edginess. However, he is also a mutative artist whose skills bridge wide stylistic plains. It's also easy to forget that Metheny played on Ornette Coleman's "Song X" (1986), an album of frenetic yet deceptively restrained free jazz that works as a useful touchstone for what Vu and Metheny have created here."
