The central work in the recital is Brittens Lachrymae. Richters close association with the composer afforded him a deep understanding of Brittens sound-world. Both he and Bashmet find a huge amount in the work, with each variation or reflection being sculpted in the most intensely characterised way imaginable. Seldom does one hear this work vested with such colour and startlingly juxtaposed sonorities, each adding to the disquietingly cumulative, slow revelation of Dowlands song. Ive never heard it played with such personalised and emotive control as here. It bears some similarity with the Czech performance of 1979 by Josef Kodousek and Kveta Novotná who take an identical tempo but its altogether more viscerally shaped than that excellent performance. Nina Dorliac (1908-1998) was een Russische sopraan en zangdocent. In 1943 ontmoette zij voor het eerst de pianist Svjatoslav Richter. Dit was het begin van een relatie die de rest van hun leven zou duren. Hun eerste gezamenlijke concert was een grote gebeurtenis in de Moskouse muziekwereld. Deze driedubbel-cd bevat voornamelijk live-opnamen uit 1943. Bijna alles wordt in het Russisch gezongen, zelfs de liederen van Schubert. "After listening to all the songs by the composers shown above, it is my feeling that some of Dorliak's most convincing singing is in the Glinka, Dargomyszky, and Prokofiev songs. (...) One thing is quite clear: Dorliak learned to sing well in her native Russia ... there is not that ugly wide vibrato and nasal quality we often associate with Russian singers, and she knows how to express heartfelt expression in her vocalism.
