"This Is My Country opent de score, op soepele ritmiek en soulvolle gitaarlicks diept de song die Curtis Mayfield samen met The Impressions bracht een politiek statement uit 1968 dat het diepgewortelde racisme en ongelijkheid hekelde en actueler blijft dan ooit. Via de rauwe blues van Trouble In Mind met hamerend pianospel en op wiegende blazers komen we bij de gospel. Farther Along vloeit er moeiteloos met een impressionante acapella uitvoering. Na Handwriting On The Wall, volgt het van Nina Simone geleende I Wish I Know How It Would Be To Be Free in een swingende uitvoering. Uiteraard keert Mavis terug naar haar eigen roots, het door orgel en priemende gitaren aangestuurde Move Along Train van vader Roebock ’Pops’ Staples werd ooit door Helm gecoverd. De gastheer blijft overigens op opvallend de achtergrond ergens achter zijn drumkit. Achteraf bekeken klinkt This Maybe The Last Time pijnlijk profetisch evenals Helm’s When I Go Away." "Van de 3 geweldige leadzangers in The Band is Helm als enige nog onder ons. Het boertje-van-buutn uit Arkansas heeft zelfs zijn keelkanker overleeft met een stem waarop iets meer krasjes zitten, maar die inlevender en bezielder dan ooit is. Zijn eerste soloplaat sinds 25 jaar is geproduceerd door dochter Amy (Ollabelle). Met een sleutelrol voor Bob Dylans toergitarist Larry Campbell op diverse instrumenten is het een hartverwarmende ode aan zijn boerenfamilie. Aardse en met een dikke laag eelt bedekte country en bluegrass, verrijkt met fiddle en mandoline en meestal diep geworteld in de hardvochtige deltagrond. Liedjes die hij van zijn ouders leerde, van de Carter Family, van bluesman J.B. Lenoir, maar ook recenter werk, zoals Steve Earles mijnwerkersmanifest "The Mountain" en Buddy en Julie Millers fraaie "Wide River To Cross". Zijn 'solo'-debuut en derde album op één CD. "Levon Helm was arguably the heart and soul of the Band, and his back porch Arkansas drawl gave many of the Band's best songs their strong sense of history and character. This set combines Helm's 1977 Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars with 1980's American Son, and while it is nice to have both in one package, the fact that both albums ended up being somehow less than the sum of their parts is still apparent. Not that there aren't fine high points on both outings -- "Milk Cow Boogie" from the RCO All-Stars sounds like the Band never broke up at all (which in a way they didn't, they simply collapsed like a tent without enough poles in 1976) while "Hurricane" and "Watermelon Time in Georgia" from American Son have a wise and assured air. It's all very competent stuff, but lacks spark, and given the talent involved (Dr. John, the MG's, Paul Butterfield, Fred Carter, Jr.), that seems pretty amazing." (Steve Leggett, Allmusic)
"Levon Helm's Ramble shows feature Helm and his band playing with a handful of friends and guest artists each week, and the intimate gigs have been popular enough that Helm has been playing occasional Ramble-style concerts in larger venues. Like this one, at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium (the former home of The Grand Ol' Opry) in the fall of 2008, where his band (led by multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and vocalist and mandolinist Amy Helm) plays a handful of classic tunes from Helm's years with the Band and a couple numbers from his more recent solo efforts, while several guests join the band, including Sheryl Crow, Buddy Miller, Sam Bush, John Hiatt, and Little Sammy Davis. Levon sings well on several numbers and is still one of the most soulful drummers alive. His ensemble, capable of playing spare to rollicking New Orleans-style R&B, is superb, and does right by the half-dozen Band classicst without slavishly copying original.
