"Een verrassende vocale jazz-cd is Make This City Ours van de Britse jazz-zangeres Claire Martin. Het repertoire is goed gekozen en ze wordt begeleid door topjazzmusici: Gerard Presencer (flügelhorn/trompet), Gareth Williams (piano), Peter Washington (bas), Gregory Hutchinson (drums). Behalve standards als Summer (Estate), Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home en How Deep Is The Ocean? zingt Martin ook bijzondere nummers als Make This City Ours Tonight (de openingstrack, geschreven door M. Nascimento/T. Mann), Gettin' High van Gino Vannelli, Another Night (Dan Siegel/Mark Winkler) en Empty Bed (een eigen compositie). "Trumpeter Joe Magnarelli's debut as a leader features the boppish trumpeter in a straight-ahead setting. His quintet, which is augmented by percussionist Daniel Sadownick on "Bella Carolina," also features spirited solos from tenor-saxophonist Eric Alexander and pianist Renee Rosnes. Every selections works well during the mixture of standards and originals. Among the more memorable performances are a revival of Tom McIntosh's "Cupbearers," an up-tempo "After You've Gone," Magnarelli's "Y-Not" (which is based on "The More I See You") and the trumpeter's sensitive ballad feature on a slow version of "When Your Lover Has Gone." Jonny King is een Amerikaanse jazzpianist, advocaat, visser en schrijver. "Een veelbelovende jazzpianist/-componist van dit moment {1996} is Jonny King. Op "Notes from the underground" staan zes door hem zelf geschreven composities; de standard "Mean to me" werd geschreven door Turk/Ahlert en "Blow-up" door Herbie Hancock. Zoals elke goede jazzmusicus grijpt ook King terug op de traditie, maar zijn muziek is vooral te karakteriseren als 'postbop'. Nogal recht toe rechtaan, met de nodige improvisatie, is het openingsnummer "Gnosis". Lyrisch is "Soliloquy" waarin behalve King zelf nog bassist Peter Washington en drummer Billy Drummond schitteren. Saxofonist Joshua Redman krijgt alle ruimte in "Blow-up". Ook de overige nummers zijn van hoog niveau! Vibrafonist Steve Nelson bewijst ook op deze cd weer tot de hedendaagse topvibrafonisten te horen. Een jazz-cd die absoluut de moeite waard is en waarop niet slechts de platgetreden paden bewandeld worden." (Muziekweb).

""State of Mind" favors a straight-ahead hard bop/post-bop format above the soul jazz Ellis is known for -- and that approach serves the improviser well whether he is turning his attention to John Coltrane's "Grand Central," Charlie Parker's "Barbados," or the exuberant "Sunshowers" (a lesser-known piece that was written by bassist Clint Houston and recorded by trumpeter Woody Shaw in the late '70s). The hard-swinging Ellis also embraces George Gershwin's "Summertime," which is one of those Tin Pan Alley gems that has been beaten to death over the years -- Keepnews' liner notes describe "Summertime" as a song that "might seem almost ready to be retired." But Ellis' Coltrane-ish, slightly abstract version of "Summertime" (which uses a rare, seldom heard arrangement by saxman Noel Jewkes) doesn't sound generic or common.
