Duke's periods with Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa (the latter an ongoing relationship; it was Zappa who introduced Duke to the synthesizer) had taught him a ton musically and about working in the studio. The players here include Leon "Ndugu" Chancler and bassist John Heard. The sound is a seamless mixture of fusion, jazz, funk, and sound experiments; all are quite musical. It is a shock in the present century to even consider that this was Duke's first date as a leader even using a synth -- the ARP 2600 -- because he comes across as a master of its many textures and possibilities. The electric Rhodes and acoustic pianos are still a big part of the sound here, and the radio-friendly chart-topping funk he would cut later in the decade was still a little ways off." "Toetsenist George Duke besloot zich voor In A Mellow Tone totaal te concentreren op melodie. Het basisidee was om traditionele standards te mengen met eigen werk dat in het verlengde daarvan lag. Zo passeren Duke Ellingtons "In A Mellow Tone", "Never Will I Marry", "I Love You Porgy" van George en Ira Gershwin en de Sergio Mendes-song "So Many Stars" de revue. Zelf voorziet hij de CD van een nieuwe solopianoversie van zijn jaren tachtig hit "Sweet Baby". Bassist Brian Bromberg en drumster Terri Lyne Carrington leveren daarbij een adequate begeleiding. Album uit 1998. Na de lekker energieke jazzrock-opener volgen er vnl. Bob James-achtie late-nite softfusion-jazz-stukken, even onderbroken door een licht-swingend funky nummertje. Duke speelt veel op de warm klinkende Fender Rhodes.

"For the past 35 years George Duke has been one of the least predictable jazz, funk and fusion keyboard players around. This album shows that he hasn't changed. On "Trust", the pulsating "T-Jam" and the more contemporary "Saturday Night" Duke delivers classic funk in his own unique style, just as he does on "I Wanna Know", proving the man hasn't lost his touch. On "Sausalito" and the equally bouncy "Homeland" that Brazillian percussion gets going from Airto for yet another of Duke's trademarks but here, the tunes have a jazzier, more improvised feel to them. Throughout 'Duke' George is heard on the acoustic rather than electric piano. Nowhere is this more evident then the uncharacteristically gospel-soul flavor of Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman", much more upbeat r then the original. Baccarach's "In Between The Heartaches" recieves a similar treatment. Was op zijn voorgaande albums voor het MPS-label nog regelmatig te horen dat we hier te maken hadden met een toetsenist die enkele jaren in de band van Frank Zappa had gespeeld, nu integreert hij meer invloeden uit funk en soul in z'n fusion-geluid. De virtuoze fusion-instrumentals met razendknap spel op een arsenaal aan synthesizers zijn niet afwezig, maar worden dus afgewisseld met dansbare funk-grooves en ingetogen soulballads. En af en toe doen latin(jazz)-invloeden hun intrede, culminerend in "A Brazilian Love Affair", het album uit 1979 waar deze box mee afsluit. Fusionmuzikanten als Stanley Clarke (bas) en Mike Sembello (gitaren) die op de eerste vier albums zijn te horen waren voor de gelegenheid 'ingeruild' voor latinjazzcracks Milton Nascimento, Airto en Flora Purim. Hij zou nadien nog vele albums blijven maken, tot vlak voor z'n dood. Op 5 augustus 2013 overleed Duke aan leukemie.

"Following two studio recordings, this impressive band hit the road and cut this session with keyboardist George Duke. Their encounter provided for an uneven, but infectious, recording. "Hip Pockets," composed by Cobham, and "Ivory Tattoo," composed by Scofield, begin the session with some intense playing. Things get a bit goofy with "Space Lady" (a song which probably worked better live), and a bit melodramatic with "Almustafa the Beloved." "Do What Cha Wanna" features Duke on vocals and, ironically, made it onto Cobham's "Best of Billy Cobham". The closer, "Frankenstein Goes to the Disco," is primarily a vehicle for Cobham, while "Sweet Wine" and "Juicy" are good jam sessions. Despite some corny moments, this is a fun session that continues to be one of Cobham's most sought after recordings, leading to its release on CD." (Robert Taylor, Allmusic)
