Although Belafonte would never score with a single as big as "Day O" again, An Evening With Belafonte did include the West Indian Christmas song "Mary's Boy Child," which became a huge seller in Great Britain. Uiterst succesvolle dubbelaar uit 1959, 'The granddaddy of all live albums' (Allmusic). Eerst horen we een korte orkestrale show-ouverture, die een vrij gelikt Vegas-show-achtig optreden doet verwachten, maar ho: dat is zeker niet het geval. Belanfonte wil een muzikaal-cultureel verhaal vertellen en hij heeft daartoe het optreden in drie actes opgedeeld. De eerste acte laat hij onder de titel 'Moods of the American negro' traditionele afro-amerikaanse muziek horen, zoals o.a. in de slavernij-tijden op de katoenvelden was te horen. Dan neemt hij ons mee naar de Cariben middels met authentiek klinkend Caribisch-Engels accent vertolkte calypso-liedjes als "Day O" en "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)". Hier is hij duidelijk het meest in z'n element - dit is de Belafonte die we het best kennen en het repertoire waarom hij het meest geliefd is. Dan gaan we in vliegende vaart nog even naar andere plekjes op de wereld, o.a. Ierland ("Danny Boy") en Mexico ("Cu Cu Ru Cu Cu Paloma").
"In 1988, Harry Belafonte turned 61 years old. After releasing exactly one album of new material in fifteen years, Belafonte showed the world that he still had enough in him to issue a collection of vital, exciting music with a point of view. The cause that triggered this creative explosion was South Africa's apartheid system. Long an advocate of black sovereignty in the country, Belafonte combined anger, defiance, and pride in this invigorating selection of songs, recorded in Johannesburg and featuring South African artists such as Brenda Fassie and Youssou N'Dour. The wry, cynical humor in protest songs such as the title track, "Move It" and "Kwela" hearken back to similarly constructed political songs from the West Indies. This album jumpstarted Belafonte's stalled recording career and was released along with concert videos of Belafonte and a variety of African recording artists supported by Kodak's home video division. Succesvol album uit 1960. Buiten amusements-repertoire ligt z'n grote kracht in z'n interpretaties van volksliedjes uit de hele wereld: o.a. uit Mexico (bijzonder versie van 'La Bamba'), Zuid-Afrika (met Miriam Makeba), een jiddisch lied.
Al ruim twee decennia vóór Paul Simons "Graceland" was er een Amerikaan die samenwerkte met Zuid-Afrikaanse musici en de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek aan de hele wereld liet horen. De typische koorzang, zoals die later bekend werd gemaakt door Ladysmith Mambazo, is ook hier al (in een meer begeleidende rol) te horen. Belafonte en Makeba wisselen de leadvocalen af en putten uit zowel Zulu- als Xhosa-muziek. "This is a straight reissue of the RCA Victor album, originally released in 1965. Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba sing together on only two tracks here ("Train Song" and "Cannon"), splitting the vocals on the other tracks, often backed by a small choir. While the title suggests a concert setting, this is actually a marvelous studio album of South African songs, and the bright melodies and careful arrangements are wonderfully recorded, with both Belafonte and Makeba at the top of their game.
