Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan recorded some lasting music in the latter half of 1957. On August 1, they participated in an all-star septet that taped what came to be known as Jazz Giants '58. Their compatibility of the Giants session made this follow-up less than three months later inevitable. In between, Mulligan also formed a studio partnership with Paul Desmond. Producer Norman Granz's decision to pair Mulligan with other saxophonists over the next few years, and the manner in which the material was reissued in the '60s and '70s, have made the present set look more like part of a Mulligan Meets... series than initially intended. Sources reveal that it was Getz who chose the rhythm section, while Mulligan had the idea of swapping horns on the final three titles recorded. (bron: Verve)

With Jimmy Rowles on piano (his intro on "Sunday" sounds like a ragtimer like Willie "The Lion" Smith just pushed him off the stool before the band came in), Mel Lewis on drums, and always superb Leroy Vinnegar on bass present and accounted for, the rhythm section is superbly swinging with just the right amount of bop lines and chords in the mix to spice things up. The ghost of Duke Ellington hovers over every note on this record (Billy Strayhorn was one of his main arrangers), and that is a very good thing indeed. There's a beautiful understated quality to the music on this session that makes it the perfect "relaxing around the house on a rainy day" disc to pop in the player. "The Dave Brubeck-Gerry Mulligan quartet is heard in a very inspired performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, just a short time before a riot by the audience closed the festival. These versions of "Take Five" and "Open the Gates" are memorable, but it is the extended "Blues for Newport" that is truly classic. Mulligan and Brubeck (backed by bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson) constantly challenge each other during this exciting performance, making this set well-worth searching for." Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996) maakte begin jaren '50 legendarische opnamen met Chet Baker, maar dat was niet de enige grote trompettist die in het kwartet van de baritonsaxofonist glorieerde. Tussen medio 1957 en medio 1959 maakte Art Farmer soms deel uit van Mulligans pianoloze kwartet. Veel is er niet van vastgelegd en deze Italiaanse TV-opname uit 1959 is dan ook een welkome aanvulling. Niet alleen wordt er prachtige hardbop gespeeld (een mengeling van originals en standards), het is ook schitterend om te zien. Natuurlijk, de beelden zijn niet naar huidige digitale maatstaven, maar artistiek van hoge kwaliteit. De cameramannen leggen perfect het genot vast dat de heren, en vooral Mulligan, uitstralen tijdens hun spel. Daarbij komt, dat het kwartet speelt voor een hoge muur en er spots onder de musici voor het podium zijn geplaatst. Gevolg is een fascinerend schaduwspel op de muur, waar regelmatig op gefocust wordt. Daarbij bevat de DVD vrijwel het gehele concert (van de toegift is alleen de audio vastgelegd).
Nooit eerder uitgegeven opnamen van het concert dat het Gerry Mulligan-sextet op 7 april 1956 gaf in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw. Michiel de Ruyter noemde dit concert in zijn Parool-recensie destijds het belangrijkste jazzgebeuren in ons land na de oorlog. In de jaren vijftig en zestig van de twintigste eeuw hebben vele legendarische Amerikaanse jazzmusici op het podium van het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw gestaan. In de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw brengt het voormalig Nederlands Jazz Archief unieke opnamen uit van deze legendarische nachtconcerten. Puttend uit de rijke jazzcollectie van Muziek Centrum Nederland voegt het tweede deel van Jazz at the Concertgebouw bijna tachtig minuten muziek toe aan de jazzgeschiedenis. Een concert van (toen) jonge Amerikaanse topmusici, die ontspannen en soms zelfs baldadig op het podium van het Amsterdamse klassieke bolwerk staan.
