"Up North is the name of this album and it is the result of a unique collaboration between Bob Brookmeyer, one of the great legends in American big band jazz, and Lennart Åberg, who is without doubt one of the foremost among Swedens jazz musicians. Bob Brookmaeyer, who for a long time had been fascinated by Lennart Åbergs playing on the soprano saxophone, took the initiative already in the mid 1980s to compose for Åberg and idea that was finally realized after more than twenty years. Among the pieces on this CD you will find Brookmeyers Suite for Soprano Saxophone and 16 Players, composed for Åberg, and Lennart Åbergs big band suite In the Tradition. Joan Reinders, arrangeur/componist en leider van het Millennium Jazz Orchestra, tipte deze CD tijdens zijn Luisterrijk-lezing, 2 oktober 2010 in MAC Berlijn, Enschede. "Brookmeyer begon al in 1980 aan de klus klassieke muziek schrijven voor groot jazzorkest. Hier is echter iets anders aan de gang. Brookmeyer ontmoette rond de eeuwwisseling Mieke Honingh van het Gustav Klimt Strijkkwartet, die hem vroeg een stuk voor haar ensemble te schrijven. Toen producer Frits Bayens nadien hetzelfde vroeg voor groot orkest, ging Brookmeyer aan de slag, hetgeen uiteindelijk drie stukken opleverde, waarbinnen klassiek en jazz elkaar de hand reiken. Die drie stukken staan op deze CD. Het vierde, het 17 minuten durende A Frolic And A Tune volgde later. Brookmeyer is erin geslaagd zowel het strijkkwartet als het grote jazzorkest hun eigen identiteit te laten behouden in een mix waarin klassiek en jazz samengaan, maar elke muziekstijl ook afzonderlijk is te horen. Album uit 1964. Destijds waren Bob Brookmeyer en Stan Getz de grote namen. De rest van de band bestond uit de vibrafonist van Stan Getz (Gary Burton), de pianist en bassist van Miles Davis (Herbie Hancock en Ron Carter) en de drummer van John Coltrane (Elvin Jones). "The young rhythm section (pianist Herbie Hancock, vibraphonist Gary Burton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones) uplifts what would have been a fairly conventional (although high quality) bop date". Nooit eerder uitgegeven opnamen van het concert dat het Gerry Mulligan-sextet op 7 april 1956 gaf in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw. Michiel de Ruyter noemde dit concert in zijn Parool-recensie destijds het belangrijkste jazzgebeuren in ons land na de oorlog. In de jaren vijftig en zestig van de twintigste eeuw hebben vele legendarische Amerikaanse jazzmusici op het podium van het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw gestaan. In de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw brengt het voormalig Nederlands Jazz Archief unieke opnamen uit van deze legendarische nachtconcerten. Puttend uit de rijke jazzcollectie van Muziek Centrum Nederland voegt het tweede deel van Jazz at the Concertgebouw bijna tachtig minuten muziek toe aan de jazzgeschiedenis. Een concert van (toen) jonge Amerikaanse topmusici, die ontspannen en soms zelfs baldadig op het podium van het Amsterdamse klassieke bolwerk staan. "Released for the first time on this 1999 Challenge CD, this live set features the unusual duo of guitarist Jim Hall and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, two-thirds of the 1957 Jimmy Giuffre Three. Although there are occasions when one of the musicians accompanies the other one, much of the time Hall and Brookmeyer function as equals, improvising together on a set of standards plus an ad-lib blues called "Sweet Basil." Their ability to improvise while thinking of the whole picture and their knack for spontaneously harmonizing really come in handy during this intriguing and frequently exciting outing. Among the selections reborn in the playing of Hall and Brookmeyer are John Lewis' "Skating in Central Park," "Body and Soul," "Darn That Dream," and "St. Thomas." In addition to Stephans, bassist Tom Warrington and guitarist Larry Koonse are on hand for some exciting music, with true interaction among the players, an all too rare occurrence in modern jazz.
