"For an album of mostly average Latin jazz, Olé Ola makes it mark with the title track, which features a genuinely soulful vocal by Jill Armsbury. Unfortunately, the song is far too short, winding up clumsily just after a percussion solo; also, the lyrics amount to little more than a repeated chorus. But drawn out at least another minute, it could have become a classic on a par with Ocho's "Undress My Mind," another rainy day Latin-jazz soul ballad. The album's other soul number, Sheller's "Mother Jones," is also quite good. Most Picante albums are pleasant enough -- if never cage-rattling -- and offer at least one memorable track. "In the late '50s, Cal Tjader and his bands played lengthy engagements at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco. This CD combines almost everything from two albums he recorded there: the entirety of "A Night At The Blackhawk", and all songs save one from "Live And Direct". This is on the mellow side for Tjader, even by the vibraphonist's standards; if "A Night At The Blackhawk" is low-energy, "Live And Direct" is positively sleepy. "A Night At The Blackhawk" employs an all-star sextet incl. Mongo Santamaria on congas, and Vince Guaraldi on piano. It's only in the Latin-Afro-Cuban mood about half the time. That's heard on the mambo version of "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Love Paris," and Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," the last of which is of course a natural for the Latin-jazz treatment. Although "Live And Direct" was billed to the Cal Tjader Quintet, it in fact usually features just a quartet of Tjader, Lonnie Hewitt (p), Victor Venegas (b), and Willie Bobo (d)." Mongo Santamaría is het pseudoniem van Ramon Santamaría (Havanna, Cuba 7 april 1922 - Miami, Verenigde Staten, 1 februari 2003), een Cubaans percussionist die zowel solo als in een groep verschillende hits had met latin jazz- en Afro-Cubaanse jazz-liedjes. Zijn "Afro Blue" uit 1958 was zijn grootste hit, en wordt algemeen gezien als jazzstandard. Het hoofdinstrument van Santamaría was de conga. Santamaría werd gezien als een van de meest bekende en beste conga-spelers ter wereld. Het album "Mambo Mongo" werd in 1992 opgenomen in New York met als speciale gasten onder andere Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin, Eddie Allen en Jimmy Cozier.
Compilatie uit begin jaren '70 van Cubaans bandleider/percussionist (1922-2003). Swingende arrangementen van o.a. 'Watermelon Man' en 'La Bamba'. Zijn arrangeerstijl werd rond 2000 weer erg populair (denk aan bijv. New Cool Collective).
