This box set in ECMs Old & New Masters Series collects Terje Rypdals two-LP Odyssey album heard on CD, for the first time, in its entirety, including the much-requested and epically-rocking Rolling Stone and "Unfinished Highballs", a recently unearthed 1976 radio recording that documents the Norwegian guitarists work for his Odyssey quartet and the Swedish Radio Jazz Group. The complete Odyssey may address a longstanding demand, but Unfinished Highballs will surprise even Rypdals most committed fans. It reveals that not only were many of the markers which would come to define his career already in place, but the intrepid guitarist was already searching for ways to include, rather than exclude, in his approach to composition and performance. This album also features one of Rypdal's best-loved works, the gorgeously stark and stately "Topplue, Votter & Skjerf" -- Norwegian for "Hat, gloves, and scarf," an idiomatic phrase implying the onset of their long and cold winter." Deze twaalf composities van de Noorse pianist Ketil Björnstad geven volop uiting aan de ruimte op zee en aan de op het eerste gehoor eentonige patronen van de deining. Waarin bij nadere beschouwing toch allerlei patronen door elkaar lopen in wederzijdse beïnvloeding. Het overstag gaan bij het ronden van een kaap brengt wat heftiger veranderingen teweeg die vooral in het gitaarspel van Terje Rypdal worden verklankt. Een reis op zee die niet geheel van gevaren ontdaan is maar over het geheel toch op een rustgevende deining verloopt. Dompel je onder in de oerkracht van de zee. (GR Muziekbank)

The session features an incredible ECM veteran lineup with Terje Rypdal on guitar, Bjorn Kjellemyr (from Rypdal's Chasers band) on bass, and virtuoso Jon Christensen on drums. The record has an overall relaxing and polished feel, with abrupt and other-world sounds from Rypdal's electric strat--keeping the music from settling or being to pretty. The result is a lengthy piece with a consistent musical theme that, while easy and peaceful, never lets the listener lose interest. Opgenomen tijdens het Jazz Open, in Stuttgart, juli 1994. Drie meesters op hun instrument, die alledrie in hun projecten regelmatig genre-overschrijdend bezig zijn. Zo ook hier. Rypdal speelt vaak op z'n meest rockende manier, zoals hij dat met z'n groep The Chasers liet horen. Z'n sound is onmiskenbaar, ook al gooit hij lagen vervormers over zijn signaal. In het eindnummer rockt hij er als een bezetene op los. Gurtu laat horen een oerstrakke fusiondrummer te zijn, maar daarnaast beheerst hij een heel arsenaal Indiase percussie tot in de puntjes. Het mooist is het als hij deze disciplines combineert. Bijzonder ook om te zien: hij zit op z'n knieën achter z'n drumstel. En Vitous kan met z'n contrabas ruimtelijke sferen neerzetten met diepe noten (geplukt of gestreken), hij kan ook als een razende loopjes spelen. Hier is hij weer 's als violist te horen in evocatieve klankspinsels, waarbinnen z'n hemels vioollijnen het opnemen tegen de soms vederlichte, dan dreigend donkere notenwolken die Terje Rypdal uit z'n effectgestuurde gitaar tovert, over een nergens te nadrukkelijke ritmische ondergrond van Marc Marder (b) en Frank Colón (perc).
