"Kenny Barron (72) is the kind of jazz pianist whose resources are familiar and much-covered by mainstream swing players, but whose joyfully extravagant execution is a rarity today. That quality transforms this trio set from being a canter through a smooth-jazzy assortment of soft ballads, Latin smoochers and glossy swing. Barron has absorbed an encyclopaedia of jazz methods from a life on the road with legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Stan Getz, and it pours out in these tracks. "Magic Dance", with its glistening chords and Latin-jazz tick, sounds smooth at first but unleashes an impulsive torrent. Ballads such as "In The Slow Lane" display his impeccably light touch. The jangling "Lunacy" is a collective bustle prodded by bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake, while "Nightfall" is delicate drift through slow chords. "John Birks Gillespie (1917-1993) was een imposante trompettist en muziekvernieuwer, maar haalde op en naast het podium ook volop fratsen uit. Heruitgave uit 2003 van album uit 1989. "Larry Coryell will always be best known for arguably being the first fusion guitarist, but his career has been quite wide-ranging ever since the late '60s. On "Shining Hour", he mostly sticks to jazz standards other than his own "Floyd Gets a Gig" and Brian Torff's "Apathy Rains." Several of the selections are identified with Miles Davis including "Nefertiti" and "The Sorcerer" but there are also hard swinging versions of "All the Things You Are" and "My Shining Hour." Coryell, whose playing works well in this (for him) rare setting although he is not really a boppish improviser, interacts with pianist Kenny Barron (who sometimes takes solo honors), bassist Buster Williams and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith." "Hoezeer de jazz in 1972 zich in een staat van overgang bevond, blijkt vooral uit het laatste stuk uit deze live-opname van het kwartet van Yusef Lateef, "Atlantis Lullaby". Het door pianist Kenny Barron gecomponeerde "The Untitled" heeft een uitgebreidere structuur dan het reguliere thema-solo’s-thema. Het opent met een stevig uptempo (waardoor het een voortzetting lijkt van de opener, "Inside Atlantis") waar Lateef met zijn tenorsax overheen dendert. Dan neemt de groep gas terug en horen we een passage met de gestreken contrabas van Bob Cunningham, waarbij we in de saxofoonbijdrage Oosterse toonbuigingen en voorslagen horen. Het geheel doet Indiaas, raga-achtig aan, met de bas als drone. Na dit contemplatieve deel wordt het weer een stuk ruiger en horen we Lateef met een homerisch gelach door de muziek heen breken. "Tenor saxophone player Bill Barron (1927-1989) possessed an original voice - not revolutionary, but unique in its way. Live At Cobi's comes from a pair of late '80s concerts Barron gave not long before his death. Presented here is a live gig by a briefly reunited Barron Brothers Quartet. Bill and his pianist sibling Kenny jointly led a group from 1968 to 1974, recording all too infrequently but establishing themselves as one of the top echelon fraternal teams in jazz. Bassist Cecil McBee and Kennys Sphere colleague Ben Riley complete the rhythm section, contributing mightily to the overall passion and explosiveness of the performances. Barron is sometimes shortchanged as a Coltrane disciple. In his accompanying notes, critic Mark Gardner corrects this misconception by asserting Barrons advanced harmonic concepts as precursors to Tranes own.
